Electrocutions are rarer these days but this is Tennessee's third in 10 months; those sentenced before 1999 have the option of choosing it over lethal injection.

On.  1,750 volts for 20 seconds.  15 seconds rest.  On again for 15 seconds.

Followed by a 5 minute break before the doctor checks for a heartbeat.

I've seen that lethal injection can be a hideous process....

The electric chair is brutal, and similarly the gas chamber, that hasn't been mentioned, is unnecessarily brutal!

I'm sure that the victim's family would relish the pain, and drama, but surely there must be more, less complicated methods!

In a hospice, when close to the end, they simply use a muscle relaxer, which works on the heart!

Why could they not simply anaesthetise the person, and then use any number of procedures, to complete the process?

Even an over administration of the anaesthetic would, in itself, be enough!

If they want more drama, why not revert to hanging, which hasn't been mentioned?

I agree Lady Faye Verrit

I think executions in the USA are quite appalling.

The family and friends sit watching the execution on the other side of the glass.

They want to see the condemned person suffer a bit before death, a bit of torture first.

In completely degrades these people and the USA themselves...but that is there way

Does not seem to stop the high crime rate either?????????????

Execution is supposed to be some kind of revenge, on the condemned person, as far as I can see

My bad - it is indeed Old Smokey in Tennessee. Apologies to both Old Sparky and Old Smokey.

I think taking a person's life should be sufficient punishment. On the grounds the vast majority of people do not want to die.

No need to add torture to it.

Whilst I'm sure it is an appalling process I wouldn't waste as much of a second worrying about it.
Much in the same way that those being executed didn't give a thought for those they were murdering.

That is true Akabula..although I see one chap only drove the van

If somebody murdered or did something very bad to someone I cared for, I am sure I would want them to suffer.

The problem is if we descend to the level of the criminal....does it really benefit us.

We need to have laws and punishments including perhaps the death penalty. But I don't like things that drive us to the extremes

because I think we all suffer, we need a gentler society.

Only my own opinion of course

Maybe they should consider the guillotine, as France have one they are not using!

Perhaps stick the head on a spike, for those present to take photos, to hang on their walls at home!

I prefer to think of those murdered rather than the murderers.
Not sure they do suffer btw.

Thinking about the gas chamber, which was phase out, and was going to suggest as to why not use Carbon Monoxide!

Then I see that it is part of a cocktail of ingredients, but why not just on it's own?

"based on a lower court’s conclusion that gassed inmates can suffer an extreme amount of pain and that there is a substantial likelihood that such pain would last for several minutes. (Over time, eyewitnesses had also reported a number of long and gruesome lethal gas executions in California and other states.)"

Their sentence is execution, not torture and execution

There is hanging, shooting quite a few ways to kill people
