this is McDonnell chatting sh ite:

The shadow chancellor’s comments at Edinburgh Fringe Festival on Wednesday suggested that MPs attempting to block a no-deal Brexit would involve the monarch if they ran out of options.

Mr McDonnell said Labour would ask the Queen to appoint party leader Mr Corbyn as prime minister if Mr Johnson refused to step down.

He said he did not want to “drag the Queen into this” but would “send Jeremy Corbyn in a cab to Buckingham Palace to say we’re taking over”.

McDonnell 's comment was a quip.
BUT within the constitution, if Johnson loses a vote of no confidence in the government, as PM he should resign.
His ' advisor' has stated , he would not resign. In this instance, the Queen would be advised that a new Government needs to be formed and she would insist that the ' defeated ' PM step down.

The UK economy is one step away from a possible recession, after shrinking 0.2% in the second quarter.

It is the first time the country's GDP - the measure of economic expansion - has contracted since late 2012.

Manufacturing output fell by 2.3%, the biggest calendar quarter fall since 2009
The important services sector grew but at the weakest rate since early 2016.
Business investment, which has been historically weak since the June 2016 Brexit vote, faltered further in the second quarter, contracting by 0.5%.

Despite this, Chancellor Sajid Javid said the fundamentals of the UK economy are "strong".

If the third quarter returns a negative result, then the resulting recession would be the first since the financial crisis and recession of 2008-09.

But it will not be clear whether the UK has managed to avoid a recession or not until early November - after the 31 October deadline for the UK to leave the European Union.

The pound fell against the euro and the US dollar on the GDP news.

David Cheetham, chief market analyst at XTB, said: "Given the growing threat of a no-deal Brexit that looms menacingly overhead, it would not be at all surprising if the current quarter also shows a contraction - therefore meeting the standard definition of a recession with consecutive drops in quarterly GDP."

Nancy Curtin, chief investment officer of Close Brothers Asset Management, said there is "no doubt the UK is struggling".

"The services and automotive sectors have decelerated, construction and manufacturing have declined, and business activity has stalled. The impact of Brexit is no doubt exacerbated by the wider global slowdown."

Chris Williamson, chief business economist at IHS Markit, said: "Given the backdrop of slower global economic growth and heightened Brexit uncertainty, the UK economy looks set to struggle in coming months.

"There's a chance that we could see growth lift higher amid no-deal Brexit planning as we head towards 31 October, but the headwinds in the wider economic environment mean any such boost is likely to prove all too brief."

@lfc1871 for the umpteenth time it is the ERG and other Leave MPs who kept us in.

Theresa May negotiated her withdrawal agreement with the EU.
We were due to exit the EU on 29 March.
The reason we are still in the EU now is that Tory Brexiteer headbangers, including Boris and the ERG, voted against Theresa May's deal in the House of Commons.
Three times.
Well three times for the ERG but Boris voted for and against the same deal on different occasions.

It is not the Remainers fault that Leave MPs are too stupid to accept yes for an answer. If Leave MPs had voted for Theresa May's deal, we would already have left the EU.

Corbyn has more to fear from a no confidence vote than Johnson, hard to imagine Corbyn surviving calling a vote and then losing it because a third of his MPs went awol, the reason he did not call a vote of no confidence against May was because he knew he couldn't rely on his own party to back him.

there is no guarantee that Bozo will lose a vote of N/C. He is just as likely to win one. How can his own Party members (forget Grieve the Brussels cuckoo) vote against him so soon after Parliament sits? He's not had chance to do anything; so explain that to the members if you dare. Labour dissenters & Jezza haters - of which there are many, are not guaranteed to vote him down either. Which could lead to quite a few sitting on their hands

you shouldnt miss out the remainers, they have played into the hands of the erg goons. after a year and a half of negotiations there was a wa, it was and is the one and only deal on offer. by consistently voting against it the remainers look like they have helped make a no deal leave likely.

I have a feeling Brexit will be delayed, temporarily certainly but permanently I am not sure.

I do not think anyone can predict what the country will say when they get their vote. There are so many variables. Even if Brexit is accomplished and I don't think it will be, The Brexit Party must stay to ensure no surrender. This will rout the Conservative control of Parliament imho. A Remain Electoral Pact would be really hard to put together. BJ is making a play for the North and Midlands. The new mix of Parliament is so hard to predict and may end in a stalemate.

WD, bozo runs down the clock thereby inviting corbyn to call a vonc which the idiot does. bozo then calls a ge framing it as him and the people against those trying to stop brexit. several reasons why immediate post brexit isnt that bad - mainly many exporters dont even try to send product abroad until there is certainty so volumes are down and the day after brexit is a friday which is a quieter day at the ports anyway. all told not much to report at dover save for mark gino francois screaming 'it was all project fear'. bozo wins ge. economic data is lagging so six to twelve months until the country discovers that trading on wto alone (save for a few mainly partial roll overs) isnt very good at all and then the tories are hated. bozo goes from winning an election to being out on his ear in two years.

i really havent got a clue but we are in constitutional crisis, this is my wild (meaning clueless) guess. this could be a fun thread if everyone puts a time on how long he stays in power and says why. i am probably way out, only time will tell. there are many, many possibilities.

Bribes have gone oot oop North and in the Midlands

The major challenger to the BJ is Nigel Fromage and the Brexit Party. A no Deal victory could be undermimed by losing the peace. Lets talk about the £39 Million after Brexit!

Corbyn will not be able to Govern because he cannot control his own party. As I said earlier one way the PLP can get rid of Corbyn is to nominate someone else as PM, even a Conservative!

These are extraordinary times. This may also be decided in the Law Courts and what role will the Queen play. That is really interesting to me.

Report Just Checking • August 10, 2019 8:34 PM BST
Your statement is based on the assumption that the deal was "out" which they do not believe to be the case, and given e.g. the backstop was essentially keeping us in forever with no veto to allow us to actually leave as such, you cannot say that.
Report Angoose • August 10, 2019 8:56 PM BST
The wording of the backstop within the withdrawal agreement gave provision for “alternative arrangements” to be put in place. These arrangements could include the magic solution that was thrown in to the debate by certain Brexiteers without any precise details being provided.

It might need to run as long as Kohl and Mitterand. If we Brexit with no deal, then it might take that long to negotiate replacement deals with the EU (that will need to be agreed by all 27 members).

And to negotiate deals with other countries to replace the ones they already have with the EU but that we will no longer be part of.

Ramruna: i don't know how many times i've got to say this, but the nutcases deal is kaput - gone, buried. Non-retrievable & non-negotiable. This is a point that the EU & the dissenters need to get their head around. It is the main reason that no-deal is being pushed. No one wants it, no one will vote for it (except Grieve) as a majority. The leavers messed nothing up; the nutcase did it with Molly Robbins; she signed something she shouldn't have because she knew that was all the EU were going to give/tell her what to present to Parliament. She also thought (wrongly) that her own Party would capitulate or she could bully them into accepting the surrender (wrong again) This isn't something i've just come on board with; i've been a hater of the nutcase since Lancaster House. The surrender was being planned as soon as they left the building. Everyone who you call a "leaver" ERG? Knew exactly what was happening from then. So they decided on their own plan of action over 2 years ago; & happily - for me & many many others, they now have control. The plain & simple fact is that the remain community in Parliament have been stuffed over; not only by the ERG, but by Labours inadaquecies & some very dumb MPs

Boris voted for Theresa May's deal. It is true he also voted against it, but one imagines he does not feel very strongly about it either way.

Labour's 2017 manifesto committed it to leave, honouring the referendum result, but on far different terms from the May deal, and ruling out "no deal". You should not simply lump Labour in with Remainers. Not liking Theresa May's deal is something they share with you and the ERG.

For the ERG, if all that matters is leaving on any terms, then they should have voted for Theresa May's deal. If the terms do matter, and it seems they do, then they must not support "no deal" which is the worst of all possible worlds and which, as stated earlier, will immediately start new negotiations for deals but from a position of weakness.

As for Bozo voting for the deal, once he did, & he was conned.
I never lumped Labour in with remainers; i said they has inadequecies, & they have; one of them is called Corbyn. I also know (i just posted such) that no one liked the nutcases/EU deal. That's why it's dead & buried. There may well be some small parts of it repeated in a deal to come after we leave, just like most deals have repetitive points once agreed in full by all.
