About 20 years or so ago, a lady friend of mine gave me a copy of "Beloved" telling me how good it was.
Jeez, I hardly got through the first chapter it was so depressing talking about the ghost of a dead child. I never got far enough the read the main point of the book. I put it down and never picked it up again and I'm an avid reader of books. |

OP has wrong conspiracy theory.
Toni Morrison is a seriously big name in the United States. The reason the BBC's gone overboard is they sit around watching the American news channels all day, and take their lead from the yanks. It is the same reason the BBC often leads on what are really just American domestic stories, especially at the weekends when the more senior editors aren't around. |

Further to my earlier post on the BBC mindlessly aping American news channels:-
4am Thursday. BBC news site lead story is President Trump visiting the shooting sites. Surely of American domestic interest only (the photo op, not the actual shootings at the weekend). BBC also reports two Canadian murder suspects found dead. One victim was American, which is probably why the Americans covered it. |

7.30am -- the grown-ups have arrived for work and downgraded Trump and moved "Sharp rise in women caught carrying knives" to be the lead story. I'd have gone with the copper attacked with a machete in Leyton but never mind. The two dead murderers story has been removed from the front page.

99.99% of people in Britain wouldn't have been able to pick out Toni Morrison from an identity parade, let alone name any of her "works". I'm aware obviously that I'm dignifying them using that expression.
The same ludicrously inflated BBC tributes also marked the passing of Maya Angelou a few years back. Another person that basically no-one in the UK had ever heard of, but lots of nice middle-class white virtue-signallers who had never read her output boarded the bandwagon as fast as they could. |

Snowflakes on here moaning because the BBC is trying to educate them.
You couldn’t make it up. |

I have to agree. I regard myself as relatively well read and informed, in fact very much a news and current affairs junkie. I've never heard of her. Did she have much of a profile outside of the US? It does make you wonder the BBC's rationale. Ramruna's comments at 10.47pm above appear to be bang on. Alun2005 - yes, probably right as well. Quite mind boggling the prominence some news stories are given. Perhaps also being older, wiser and more enlightened we can see through this things these days a lot clearly.

Not really jumper. It just shows that there are many ignorant " well read " people about. I appreciate this is not an anti Islamic thread but the roll call of bigotry will appear soon. Morning alun
