Michael Buerk has claimed the obese should be allowed to die an early death in order to save the NHS money.

The 73-year-old broadcaster said people should be free to overindulge and, if they die, they should be seen as weak rather than medically ill.

‘The obese will die a decade earlier than the rest of us,’

See it as a selfless sacrifice in the fight against demographic imbalance, overpopulation and climate change.’

Obesity is not a ‘national emergency’ because it is just caused by eating too much

He also queried Public Health England’s claim that overweight and obesity-related ill health costs the Health Service £6.1billion a year.

‘Who can calculate how much an obese person would have cost if they were slim?’

I get the feeling a lot of people just over eat to get attention?????

Some people may have medical problems like limited movement or have to take medication which increases weight.

The problem is not just lardy's stuffing their fat faces with takeaway!

Poor people in times of yore were generally skinny because they did not have nourishing food to eat. Now poor people are fat. The reason for this is because the food that is the cheapest and the easiest to eat for lazy people who do not prepare their food is full of fat and sugar and salt.

Here's the thang. Could food producers put heroin or cannabis in food to create addicts?  NO!

So why can they add fillers and salt and sugar and fat!

The problem is with lazy lardy's but it is also in the food production systems and food producers being allowed to get away with bad practice.

I am not in favour of people being told what to eat but I am against food producers getting away with what they do. That should be the real question!

The NHS seems to spend billions trying to keep old people alive. But what a moral dilemma it is.

How can it turn away a 90 year old when they need treatment?

I certainly think if everyone was slim, didn't smoke, drink and only ate healthily, the cost to the taxpayer would probably be higher long term.

Former newsreader Michael Buerk has suggested that obese people should be allowed to die early in order to save the NHS money.

The 73-year-old said those who are obese may be making a "selfless sacrifice" to stop the country being overpopulated if they die a decade earlier than the rest of the population.

Writing in Radio Times magazine, the veteran BBC presenter said that fat people are "weak, not ill".

He said he does not believe obesity should be classed as a disease in a bid to encourage people to seek treatment and to "reduce the stigma (of) fatness", adding that "you're fat because you eat too much".

Buerk also queried Public Health England's claim that overweight and obesity-related ill-health costs the NHS £6.1bn a year.

He said: "Who can calculate how much an obese person would have cost if they were slim?

"How much would he or she cost if, instead of keeling over with a heart attack at 52, they live to a ripe, dementia-ridden old age, requiring decades of expensive care? (In any case, VAT on takeaways, confectionery and fizzy drinks more than covers it.)"

The former I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star added that the "freedom to make bad choices is what personal autonomy, indeed democracy, is all about", and asked "who is to say longevity is the ultimate goal in life?".

He said: "Let us positively reframe the argument.

"The obese will die a decade earlier than the rest of us; see it as a selfless sacrifice in the fight against demographic imbalance, overpopulation and climate change.

"Give them the facts to make informed decisions, by all means, 'nudge' all you like, but in the end - leave couch potatoes alone.

"They're weak, not ill."

The NHS estimates that almost a third of adults in the UK are obese, and that one in five children aged 10 to 11 are obese.

Its official website states that obesity can lead to serious health conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Report DenzilPenberthy • August 6, 2019 8:53 PM BST
He's gone down the usual route of blaming the lazy greedy fatties when we have ways of life almost set in stone by our greedy self serving money driven government, who routinely give out terrible 'health' advice in order to keep such types (and recruit more) on the carousel of ill health for as long as possible.
The healthiest societies in civilisation are very poor compared to us yet have none of our everyday nailed on common illnesses like, heart disease, diabetes, common cancers, arthritis, irritable bowel disorders, auto immune illnesses etc. the list goes on.
The answer is all in the food they eat yet we are deliberately taught and tempted to live ways of life which have been proven decades ago to increase the chances of ill health, but don't worry take these pills and you'll be fine lol.

Indeed, you've nailed another great government ploy where people work towards continuously getting worse with the incentives at the end like mobility scooters, sickness benefits and all other incentives automatically applied to such types instead of changing the CAUSE of the problem and some still think the systems aren't to blame.

If everyone  ate only what they needed to eat, and didn't eat purely for pleasure or to satisfy a raging appetite, think what that would do to the food manufacturers' profits?
Then as everyone got healthier, what about the hit the pharmaceuticals profits would take if we didn't need to take their organ damaging drugs?
We'd need fewer doctor and nurses, so there would be resistance from there as well.
It isn't going to happen.

The food keeps us fat and the pills keep us alive, in order to keep eating and taking more pills.
Which puts demand on the health service that provides jobs for people who are members of very powerful unions.
It's the perfect business model.
And the weak pay for it with lousy health and shorter lives.
Report Whisperingdeath • August 8, 2019 1:51 PM BST
It is not so much the cost of good nourishing food which as has been said is probably cheaper ( although I am worried about the kwality of the food we get ) but the convenience.

The convenience trumps things for lazy people and then they get addicted to the sugar, salt and fat. Job done addicts created! How can poor people be fat? They are drugged simples! Low wages, long work days, large amount of travel and unhealthy hours. I can see why it is so.

Just got told today that a family friend's daughter has just came out of hospital having had gallstones removed - she's in her 20s and hasn't been told the cause or given any advice on preventing future episodes just went under the knife stones gone and that's it.
Gallstones are almost exclusively due to diet it's heavily odds on she will get more as well as a host of other unnecessary illnesses down the line, are we to blame her for being clueless about this or the controlled systems, dietary and lifestyle advice.
She's a decent young lass doesn't smoke or drink who has worked in a hospital and is some kind of care worker now though still has no idea why she's got gallstones at 20 odd.
