the Republicans who thwarted Obama's attempts to push any sort of meaningful gun control, a bit like they still do now and will still do after Trump is gone.

in terms of the guns climate, Trump is no more to blame than any other Republican really

Barack Obama has said Americans must “soundly reject language” from any leader who “feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalises racist sentiments” in his first public statement since mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

In the former president’s statement on Monday, which did not mention Donald Trump directly, he also told Americans “we are not helpless” in the face of the country’s high frequency of mass shootings.

“And until all of us stand up and insist on holding public officials accountable for changing our gun laws, these tragedies will keep happening,” Obama wrote.

A shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday killed 22 people, and a second shooting outside a crowded bar in Dayton, Ohio, early on Sunday killed nine people. The suspect in the El Paso attack posted a racist, anti-immigrant screed shortly before, investigators say. The motive of the Dayton shooter, who died in the attack, is not yet clear.

Obama, like many presidents before him, has exercised caution to avoid pointed criticism of his successor. But his comments left little doubt that his call to reject the normalisation of racism referred to Trump, who has spoken disparagingly about immigrants, calling them rapists and murderers, and has decried an “invasion” at the southern border.

Trump has previously tempered his criticism of white supremacy, though he said in scripted remarks to the country on Monday that the US “must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy”. He also said he had directed the FBI to examine steps to identify and address domestic terrorism.

Obama noted that the El Paso shooting followed a trend of “troubled individuals who embrace ideologies and see themselves obligated to act violently to preserve white supremacy”. He advised Americans to also denounce the language of “leaders who demonise those who don’t look like us, or suggest that other people, including immigrants, threaten our way of life, or refer to other people as subhuman”.

Such language had “been at the root of most human tragedy throughout history”, Obama added, and had “no place in our politics and our public life”.

Republican senators are owned by the NRA. It doesn't matter how many innocent men, women and children are shot dead, Republicans do not care.

There's something particularly disgusging about using deaths to score political points but there are no levels to which the left won't lower themselves.
> 200 mass shootings in the US this year and they've found ONE they thing they can pin on Trump so they are all over it.

We had the same here of course with the left falling over themselves to try and link the Cox death to Brexit and then paint anyone voting leave as evil murder condoning nutcases to try and stop people voting for it. All 17.2 million of them as it turns out.

How can you blame one man?

Its not Trump, its the media as a whole and I'm talking the lefty media and the alt/right media, both get shut down today you'd see a lot less friction in society

Notice how they never blame the media? its always the man/woman in the white house/downing street etc, they leave eventually and someone else comes in and takes their place, they become the new pointed finger ffs

Its a joke

Democrats have worked hard to introduce gun controls.

The Republican senators, many who receive millions of dollars from the NRA, have simply turned a blind eye.

Republicans have blood on their hands. It's as simple as that.

What kind of person watches a nutcase go into a school, execute dozens of kids, then votes against gun control?

Republicans, that's who.

For what it's worth:

"When you have 15,000 people marching up, and you have hundreds and hundreds of [immigrants], and you have two or three border security people that are brave and great – and don’t forget we don’t let them and we can’t let them use weapons,” Mr Trump said, to an audience of thousands in Florida.

“We can’t. Other countries do, we can’t. I would never do that. But how do you stop these people?”

In response someone from the audience shouted: “Shoot them!”

Mr Trump then appeared to laugh before shaking his head and saying: “That’s only in the Panhandle you can get away with that statement.”

Doh?

Thomas Mair, a 52-year-old Batley and Spen constituent who had a history of psychiatric problems, and links to the US-based neo-Nazi group National Alliance, shouted "Britain first" as he carried out the attack.

I apologise. I shouldn't try an argue with an idiot!

It seemed like civil war at times between the Black population and the American Police...the number of shootings

In my opinion neither party will introduce gun control as they feel they would not be elected.

We must not forget most gun owners are responsible people...

Unfortunately it does not take many lunatics with automatic rifles to cause carnage...

It remains a question for the people of the United States themselves...

Sandy Hook massacre of many 6 year olds was still not enough for OBOOOMA to do ANYTHING AT ALL, yes it is hard for change in their gun climate but Trump banned bump stocks after the Vegas shootings...

Sandy Hook the most shocking of all, OBOOOMA should really be keeping quiet with what happened on his watch.

Too many idiots on here to try and have a decent conversation ffs! So I won't bother trying to engage them!

Uble,

The line the NRA have drawn in the sand is that any gun legislation is the tip of the iceberg and what will follow is the removal of the right to bear arms. They are steadfast in their opposition to change ANY gun law.

The gun control lobby should imho focus on one area and get a change in one law, that area again imho is the banning of Automatic and even semi automatic rifles. You do not need them to hunt. They are weapons of war and have have no place in society even American society. I think they could and should build a consensus around a change that most people ashley believe in and the kids should put pressure on their legislators and try and boycott any elected representative that does not and will not support a ban on automatic rifles that are machines of war.

I have been shooting in America several times. We drove with weapons in the trunk ( boot Wink ). Once we pulled over to the side of the road onto some waste ground. We used pistols at short range and shotguns, not rifles. While I was playing the man with the black hat shooting a can along the ground with a pistol ( and by that I don't mean a Jamaican or an African Whoops ) Some geezer pulled up in a 4x4 and pulled out an M16 assault rifle and started shooting off an M16 Assault Rifle at targets no less than 30 yards away! Wtf only in America.

I can only shudder. I see what we are like on a Friday night after a few beers. God help us over here if we ever get guns. Unfortunately the criminal element are getting guns smuggled in. Life should mean life imho or at least a very very long time, a life time!

(CNN)A Twitter account that appears to belong to Dayton mass shooter Connor Betts retweeted extreme left-wing and anti-police posts, as well as tweets supporting Antifa, or anti-fascist, protesters.

Obama needs to be careful what he says and do a bit more research......

Basically, left, right or whatever, there are violent people. If violent people have easy access to assault rifles, expect the worse.Sad

I've yet to hear a coherent argument for the US public to have access to assault rifles.

The right to bear arms never meant the right to use this type of repeat firing weapon.

'The Dayton gunman bought his AR-style weapon online and had it shipped from Texas to a gun store in Ohio, where he picked it up, according to the Dayton Police Department. '

“This type of high-volume fire is really originally contemplated for a battlefield,” said Laura Cutilletta, managing director at the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “They can kill huge numbers of people in such a short time.”

In states like Texas and Ohio, these weapons can be legally configured to quickly swap out magazines — allowing someone to continue firing another 30 (or 100) rounds in short order.
