It can be difficult for women to get a huge gun to fire. Although a uniform normally helps.

Spike Milligan was in the artillery in WW1 in africa and italy, his book "Hitler, my part in his downfall" is a good read.

My great-grandfather was in the Royal Field Artillery. He was a professional soldier. Also served 8 years in India at the start of the century.

Actually now I look Mr Milligan doesn't get to Italy until he gets to book 4 (his books are a series), "Mussolini: His Part in My Downfall".
I remember at one point he mentions one of their artillery crews he was with were wiped out by an accident when firing, risk of the job I suppose. If I remember rightly (maybe I not!) it strangely wasn't their shell that did it, it fell very short from one onto the one next to them. |
