I suppose anyone who asks the question "why do people die" just needs to think about what would happen if things didn't. 64 Generations at 20 years a generation is only 1280 years ago. 18446744073709551616 people walking about from one couple wouldn't really work. (If you take an SNP generation length of 24 hours 64 generations is only about 4 years).
