It's something I think about whenever the subject of slavery crops up.
I hate the idea of treating animals like slaves even those bred for work so the idea of treating people this way is incomprehensible to most of us alive today.
As far as the progression of humanity goes for people of African heritage has the sacrifices made by the enslaved been a positive for the African races strewn around the world? I say this as from what I've read half of the African population still lives in poverty without the basics of food and clean water and about 40% can't read or write add in the various epidemics and it's a tragic scenario.
Has Africa got any further forward than it otherwise would have without the slave trade? Should those born of African descent start looking at the slave trade in a different way because without it there's every chance they'd be still living like Africans are now had their ancestors not been taken? Or were things much better before the evil slave traders raided these countries and natural progression would've put them on par with this side of the world?
Any history buffs know what life was like in the slavery affected countries before the crime took place?

Well this would take a bit of work Denzil

When slaves were taken to America and the West Indies I do not think their lives were in any way comparable
to black people living in those countries now.

Also life in Africa varies from country to country now, probably did then.

Life in America now for black people is probably better than those in Africa now, on average.

But black people in America now still do not feel they are getting as much out of it , as say the White population,
#again on average....so they do not necessarily see themselves as lucky.

Nothing justifies slavery, it was an evil, in my opinion

what was britain like before the italians came and took slaves?

the enslaved people would have been far better off had they not been enslaved

cultural meetings dont have to be hostile and we can improve peoples
lives with kindness and not through force, and forced migration.

That is different to a legalised trade on people, what you're talking about was a direct persecution from within a country like an invasion from within.
I'm referring to what life was like in the slave trade enslaved countries before and was it better than it is now, because life is clearly better for those living in the first world now who've benefitted from the sacrifices made.

One point Denzil

Africa in not one country. It is a number of countries. There is a great variation

in the life of the black people in different African countries

I would say on average black people in the USA probably have a better standard of living that those in Africa.

The USA is a rich country.

But the blacks in the USA are United States citizens they compare themselves to other United States citizens

not their far off cousins in Africa.

Of course none of this ever justified slavery.

Are you seriously saying the treatment of Jews under Nazi rule is the same as the African slave trade?
That'd be difficult to argue imo.

The lives of black people when slaves hardly compares to the lives of black people in America now

The lives of African Americans (descendants of slaves) would be far better than if they lived in Africa now imo mainly for the reasons I gave in my opening post, but that is without knowing how life was in Africa before the slave trade.
I'm trying to find out about disease borne in Africa prior to the slave trade that could answer some quesions.

You're sarcasm is better placed here,I eat like an African most of the year due to the lierature about the lack of chronic illness illness in African civilisations that aren't affected by disease from sanitation problems, living on starches, pulses, beans and fruits and veg is the way to live to avoid all OUR WESTERN illnesses.

Interestingly perhaps, if you go to Google and type in “When did the slave trade begin?”  you’ll be presented with page after page of references to the Transatlantic trade. Just another example of the progressive Bulls**t fountain in full insidious, normalized effect.

It’s strange that whilst every civilization throughout history has engaged in slavery and dubious practice, the civilization that practiced slavery for the shortest amount of time, and did more to end the practice than any other, should be worthy of the greatest amount of condemnation. The very same civilization that has done more to pull the world out of the dirt and filth and raise the overall standard of living worldwide.

But to address the original point, slavery was common practice between tribes in sub Saharan Africa long before the Arabs, Berbers and Europeans arrived. The transatlantic trade was abhorrent, clearly, but within a few generations through the value of physical labour alone, a largely Neolithic people (most of whom hadn’t even invented the wheel) were presented with 2,000 years of accumulated knowledge and understanding.

But of course, point that out and you’ll be accused of all kinds of white supremacy…

Ain’t that so Richie? Mischief

Interesting post lux, have found a 20 odd page paper from 1943 about the slave trade and tropical disease this is from one of the early paragraphs:

Slavery  and  slave-trading go back to the dawn of history. Slaves were imported into Lower Egypt in the early dynasties ;  they made up a  considerable proportion of the population of Carthage and Rome ;   after the Mohammedan conquest of Africa they were brought from the Sudan, Abyssinia and the Zanzibar coast to northern Africa, Arabia, Turkey and  Persia. All this I  leave untouched today. My remarks will be confined to the trade which brought slaves from West Africa to the New World.

All of which is easily forgotten or not properly taught definitely not in my case.

That has always been with us...I am not sure anyone invented it

It was the Roman Emperor Hadrian who ordered them to leave Judea.

They are now back...but some of us do not think this is right.

The most important thing is that slavery was abolished in America over 150 years ago. Precisely NONE of the African-Americans (i.e. Americans) currently alive have ever been slaves. Every one of them has had an equal opportunity to live freely and progress in the world's greatest country, and we must be glad for that.

Even so, we still bizarrely see people trying to play the victim of crimes committed centuries before they were even born. The ultra-privileged person below was jailed for tax evasion, but laughably in court tried to put the blame on slavery. Quite possibly the most ludicrous 'defence' or 'mitigation' ever offered up in a court. That nonsense alone merited three months.

REGY the healthiest diets of all successful civilisations regarding longevity without chronic illness are like the one I mentioned above.
Without going too far into it our diets are responsible for almost all heart disease, cancer, diabetes, auto immune illnesses arthritis etc. the list goes on,in many of these countries you don't see ANY of the above and if they live past forty avoiding illnesses borne of sanitation can expect to get into the 95 - 105 range fairly able with a very short illness and death.

If we go back in human history there was a time when taking slaves was considered normal.

When countries fought wars they took the defeated enemy as slaves

The Democratic Greeks did this, The Romans built their Empire on slaves

There were slaves in the Middles East, The African themselves took slaves when they fought each other.

But none of this justifies the African slave trade to the Americas, we used their color as an excuse.

We all know it is wrong now.

There in NOBODY alive now in the USA who has ever owned a slave(legally) so they cannot be blamed for slavery can they?

People are not responsible for the crimes of their parents, grand parents ad infinitum.

We are only responsible for what we ourselves do, that is natural justice
