If a vase is worth £10,000, but an exact replica that is identical to the Vase but is fake was worth £10, how much would the real one be worth if it was disassembled, turned into energy, and reassembled again with different atoms using a Star Trek transporter?

Asking for a friend who has one.

It's an interesting philosophical question, I think it's to do with sentimentality?

If you offered me a gold bar, or an identical gold bar, I wouldn't care.

If you offered me a car or an absolutely identical car once owned by Elvis, you'd want it more? But it's the SAME CAR, why should it matter?

I had this exact same argument with my wife when she came back early and her twin had come round for "coffee" Whoops.

you said it was a vase, not a vase owned by someone [ of course its deifferent if its owned by someone ]
but if its just a vase...

The first one would be a copy.

In fact, extending this  ... given we all gradually replace our atoms over time as cells die and are replaced ..

If you committed a murder 50 years ago and are picked up for it, could you perhaps argue it was a DIFFERENT person who did it as it was a different set of cells? Wink

JC if the vase is a work of art and that is why it is worth 10,000
so it is the idea that is worth 10,000
Not the vase , and there is only one idea

If you want a second you need a new idea

In that sense you can’t copy an idea , you can only invent it

It's a bit like the Mackintosh Art Centre in Glasgow.
Was badly damaged by fire and they raised millions to repair it.
Another fire ravaged the site before the first repairs were complete.
Now looking for millions again.
What for? To replace the replicas.

Thinking more about this though, that means that the man who spent all those steamy nights with Princess Diana and Kylie Minogue in the early 90s wasn't the me sitting here today SadWink
