Two were an automated Indian male voice saying your internet was running slow - It had went off in the early hours that morning so they're probably watching the BT reports for outages in the area.
The one today was an English male speaking saying that my ip address had been compromised and the internet was going to be turned off.
Both are seeking to gain remote access to your device where they can then nick all your details etc. put the phone down, press 1471 get the number and report it on the BT website.

My elderly mum received a telephone call last week claiming her entire bank balance had just been withdrawn and to call a helpline number if she believed it was a fraudulent transaction.

Now, the fact is that my mum, like a lot of older folks, gets quite confused these days and believed this ****. Thankfully, she phoned me before returning the scanmer’s call and I checked online to reassure her that nothing in her account had been touched. Damn, it pissed me off! Here’s the really troublesome aspect though, ladies and gentlemen, the **** on the phone knew my mum’s account balance to within £100. The bank and police suggest it was a lucky guess but I ain’t buying that for one second. Natwest must have had its security breached in my view.

Absolute scumbags without doubt it's info from a hack or insiders passing it on they target the potentially vulnerable,my mother has had 2 episodes and my dad 1 they didn't give info out it was obtained in other ways fortunately no real damage done.
My auntie who is fairly wealthy is currently being targeted she's 83/84 and my uncle died in May hence the interest in her all of a sudden there's some complete shyte about.

I get a recorded message, woman with an american accent, advising that my internet has been hacked/compromised etc. At the start of the call they just say 'this is your internet service provider' so covering all bases.

I just hang up.

Now call me a bore(and im sure you will) but hacking and this type of thing will be made sooo much easier with 5G, just a minor detail with the woes of ****g 5G
Report dave1357 July 13, 2019 8:31 AM BST
You're just making stuff up again, terry.  5G is no more susceptible to hacking than any other form of wireless communication.

if any of these clowns phone just put the phone down very rarely do organisations phone people directly , they usually write to people , most of these people phoning are international criminal gangsters
Report impossible123 July 13, 2019 9:21 AM BST
International indeed, either from the Asia subcontinent or Eastern European most probably Russian. I remember clearly my brother-in-law would shout at them, and tell them to f*** off! And, he was an IT editor/journalist for a national broadsheet. To these nationals fraud is a painless and victimless crime as the victims will be financially reimbursed eventually.
Report Lady Faye Verrit July 13, 2019 9:43 AM BST
I guess we all have had these annoying tw@ts and yes, for the ones who are streetwise, we know how to deal with it, but
they will hit a fair few vulnerable people (if only 10%) to make it worthwhile....

At one point I stopped answering my home phone, let the call end (often ringing for a long time, which is a pointer to it being malicious)
then 1471, and put the number into Google, which often shows a history of experience of others.

A fair number are "number withheld" which you can assume were spam.

Latest strategy is to pick up the phone, but don't speak, as more often than not it's a silent call!
If they do speak, it is likely to be someone saying "hello" repeatedly and in a foreign accent.

Hang up and check 1471 to verify, and then dial 1572, and follow simple instructions, and the number will immediately be blocked!

I was getting, at the very least, a couple of calls a day, and haven't had one now, for several weeks.

The thing is that, if it is from a legitimate institution, and of any importance, they will contact you by other means....

Report dave1357 July 13, 2019 11:35 AM BST
So nothing specifically to do with 5G then? Just wireless?

I repeat, 5G is no more susceptible to hacking than any other form of wireless communication.

If you show me an expert who says otherwise, I'll show you an idiot.

If you (or your experts) are referring to new untested hardware/software then that may or may not be an issue.  There are security holes found in all new hardware and these are removed over time.

I know its completely useless to ask you this but what exactly makes 5G easier to hack than 4G?
Report detraveller July 13, 2019 11:51 AM BST
Is it the higher speed or the greater number of antennas exposed?
Maybe its easier to hack many tiny antennas compared to a big tower?

You gave out your usual insult and then said "Experts warn about major flaws in 4g and 5g networks"

In other words your example confirmed my post.

I like the Accident chasers the best.

I tell them I had an accident and I would be interested in suing for compensation then I relate the incident where I had a bad pint at the pub and in the morning I farted and liquid came out. Then I have to try and stop laughingLaugh

usually I am quite polite ask them what they want and tell them that's interesting then rest the phone on a table and let them talk themselves out. The realisation that they have been talking to themselves for 30 seconds stops them calling back and also delays them bugging someone else.

Keep them talking until you claim you have got your computer switched on then when they say they need access to it ask them just to confirm the IP address for it that BT have. It's good fun saying Ooh nearly! five or six times before they give in.

"The one today was an English male speaking saying that my ip address had been compromised and the internet was going to be turned off."
Had pretty much this the other week.

These people are low life b*stards as the people they'll get are old people and slow people and I'm sure they know this.

Can I ask, why are we handing aid to India when they have a nuclear weapons program and they have heaps of these call centres doing this remotely to the UK and they don't seem particularly interested in doing anything about stopping it unless leaned on?
Report politicspunter July 13, 2019 2:20 PM BST
Ah, the accident one! Had one of them going for a good twenty minutes or so after I told them I had crashed into another vehicle at night. When I say I am registered blind but can still see ok at night as long as there are not many cars on the road they get suspicious. When I tell them it was a police car that ran into me they usually catch on.

Report mouse muldoon July 13, 2019 7:39 PM BST
Ask them if you can speak to Buzby.
Report Just Checking July 13, 2019 7:49 PM BST
They can't protect you from all scams as they can keep changing their numbers, and with the internet they can get UK looking numbers that are connected to Voice-Over-IP (Internet) and speak to you from e.g. India with it. Mostly though they are foreign, either my phone says INTERNATIONAL or has a foreign looking number.

I know 2 people that've been led on by scammers and I despise them so much. One person was only stopped from losing a heap of money as the bank thought it suspicious and stopped the money leaving.

In addition to things like pretending they are your ISP, Microsoft, HMRC etc, I see there is now a huge rise in people pretending to be to do with benefits for the government.

How many of these are in countries doing little to nothing to try and stop it? Do they see it as income into their economy or somethig?
Report MC Roller July 13, 2019 8:17 PM BST

So looking at it logically, 5G prevents phone scamming. This is an obvious truth!
Same way as chemtrails prevent terrorism, as is eloquently described here:
