Alternate between Aldi in Wetherby and Lidl in Knaresborough. Aldi good for fruit, veg ,fish , cleaning and washing products . Lidl good for the fresh bakery. Both have good offers depending on time of year for beach gear / gardening stuff/ski gear. Four cans of guinness for £4 that's cheaper than the other supermarkets.  I like the quick checkouts -no messing about -pack by the shelves.

Their bakery products are not bad.

The big super markets stock well known brands and their own version....

Aldi have similarly named products as big brands and you can only see the Aldi  name in very small type on the back of the pack.

I'm surpried Leopard as an avid reader of the Daily Heil's femail section you don't have a copy of this in your kitchen, next to your avocado blemish grading chart:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4838518/FEMAIL-puts-copycats-test.html

LURPAK, £3.25 FOR 500g

VERSUS

NORPAK (ALDI), £1.75 FOR 500g

YOU SAVE: £1.50 per tub, or 46 per cent per 100g.

OUR TEST: Lurpak is made in Denmark, while Norpak is from Ireland, where costs are cheaper. Aldi’s option has the same subtle taste, spreads thickly and melts on potatoes without the butter splitting — a common fault with cheaper brands.
LURPAK , £3.25 FOR 500g
NORPAK (ALDI) , £1.75 FOR 500g

She also chose the budget version sandwich spread because of its health content over the branded version

EXPERT VERDICT: Angela Dowden says: ‘The ingredients are identical — both contain 64 per cent butter and 26 per cent rapeseed oil, lactic cultures, water and salt.’ Aldi says: ‘Our customers want a simple experience when they visit our stores and we package our exclusive brands in such a way that they are easily recognisable to savvy British shoppers.’

WINNER: ‘Copycat’.

It does seem a strange name for an Irish product given it's got what appears to be a longboat on it and "Nor" whick makes you think of Norway. Maybe it's from Northern Ireland and the boat is full of sash wearing men with drums and it's sailing along the historical 12th of July route.
Report Lady Faye Verrit • July 12, 2019 1:12 PM BST
Well, how incredible is this?

I just got back to my, perhaps, once every three to four weeks shop at Aldi!

The first time I went, it was a very strange experience, and somewhere after that I posted similar findings to the OP.

However, further encouraged by my daughter (she uses Tesco delivery mainly) but Aldi for selected products.

That's the way I roll now, as there are a fair number of ultra competitive items....

Greek yogurt (identical in appearance and taste to FAGE) and may even be such, is £1.39 with FAGE £1.00 more, so I get six tubs....

Incredible value on some wine with a South African Pinotage (13.5% abv) at £3.99 and a Spanish Merlot (13 % abv) at £3.69....

"Bockwurst" 8 Frankfurters in brine....twice the size of the miserable "Herta" ones and £1.29

Tomato Puree 0.33p (I paid 0.55p at Tesco, just yesterday)

Same story with Passata....

Cereals, pretty much identical to the big names, and Muesli (superb) and biscuits, crisps etc a fraction of the price!

Oh, and £3.29 for a 430G Salami Pizza.....

Anyway better shut it now, as sounding like an advert (not forgetting Pure Orange Juice at 0.55p 1lt and soft drinks 0.42 2lt}.....Laugh

So Aldi, a german company, are using Ireland as a bridgehead into our economy usurping trusted brands,
the ultimate goal being  to destroy them.

After which they will then raise their prices to a similar level to Lurpaks.

Fight them on the beaches !

Where I'm there's no Aldi, but quite a few Lidl at close proximity too. I love their Ritter Sports chocolate (dark and nutty ones); mixed peppers; high energy bread and chicken thighs - the rest I cannot comment on.

Lidl seem to be frequented by largely foreigners buying excessively (possibly) induced by perceived low prices, I believe.
Report Just Checking • July 12, 2019 5:21 PM BST
Foreign people probably like LIDL as they are all over Europe and virtually identical, some local perishable produce like milk and cheese differs, and the "Cheaper!" will be the translated word in their homeland. They know what they will get. I've been in a Tesco abroad and while I'm a fan here I was a bit disappointed.

I was going to go into a Tesco in Saudi but a local stopped me and pointed across the street. "Supermarkets here my friend? There is none good but Asda!".

ALDI is fine  ,the range isn't great  but SOME of the quality on offer in very good .

Just make sure anything fresh is consumed pretty much straight away as the 'fresh ' produce is about the same freshness i see in the reduced bin at Sainsbury's .

Once you shop there a few times you become well versed with the good and not so .

The brand names  in the big stores are pretty awful these days..PG tip[s must be one of the worst about whereas you get a  good packet of Yorkshire in ALDI for not a lot more .

Be wary too if it's a w/known brand youre looking for as some of their their own labels look similar   ...not sure how that's legal  but there u go Plain

Without a doubt the quality of most veg at Lidl eg broccoli, spring onion, lettuce, mushroom, etc, and flowers is inferior compare to the big supermarkets - they do not stay fresh fr long - but their bakery section is ok, I think; adequate nothing fancy, fresh and tasty; nuts are good value too. But, not sure about their coffee, cocoa, biscuits, tin or frozen food. Nevertheless, shoppers would still fill their trolleys with these products, households and personal hygiene stuff.

There have been numerous anecdotal reports of domestic and wild animals, e.g. dogs, roe deer and rabbits, becoming unwell/dying after eating oilseed rape foliage and/or seeds. Talking of oil seed rape, I was out in the countryside and kept thinking I smelled cabbage (my dad used to grow it and I know the smell fairly well).
Turns out oil seed rape was the source. Strange that, these fields of tall yellow flowers can smell like a *totally* different plant.

If we didn't have oil seed rape we'd have to have something, it's a lot more enviromentally friendly I'm sure than palm oil or butter, I've no problem with it.

(Apart from it's insidious and deliberately sneaky attempts to smell like a ground lying vegetable).
