That is very sad to hear. A top class journalist and betting pundit. Old school gentleman who always had time for the public. Met him often and he couldn`t be more pleasant to us all and it was genuine. He answered every letter he received from viewers, all hand written replies, and was a true gent. RIP John.
Very much a maverick and a one of a kind, will now be the tic-tac man for the gee gee's in the sky.

Cornelius Lysaght, BBC horse racing correspondent..........
With a trademark deerstalker hat, his side whiskers and his waving arms plus a booming voice, McCririck became one of the most familiar faces on British television.
A former bookmaker and award-wining journalist, his career took off as the betting specialist on Channel 4 Racing from the mid-1980s.
He brought to wider audiences the secret 'tic-tac' communication system of the racecourse betting ring, with its unique terms including 'Burlington Bertie 100 to 30' and 'Double Carpet 33 to 1'.
With his controversial views - particularly what was seen as a sexist attitude towards women including his wife Jenny - McCririck was dropped by Channel 4 in 2012.
Latterly, he made only occasional TV and media appearances but lost none of his flamboyance.
I have lost count of how many times people have come up to me and said 'do you know that mad guy with the whiskers who waves his arms around and shouts on the TV at the races - what's he really like?'
The answer was that he was a complex character: a colourful pundit and showman who brought horse racing to a wider audience, but also courted controversy of course. He was a campaigning punters' champion and a generous and supportive colleague.
He was practically the definition of the expression 'one-off'.

Unique and polarised people but did make viewing interesting and enhanced racing coverage during his time. RIP

he really made racing interesting for tv viewers. the C4 racing team of him, John Oaksey, Brough Scott, John Francome and Jim McGrath were streets ahead of what's om today.

I met him a couple of times, the last occasion was Derby finals night at Wimbledon with the wife, where he said to us(me), how on earth does a fella like you get a cracker like that,you've landed on yer feet there he said.
The wife was fairly chuffed alright.......

RIP John. A brilliant passionate journalist/TV presence who also loved the dawgs. Times changed and his opinions were no longer welcome as times moved into not being able to speak your mind if it consisted anything deemed offensive. Fast forward to now and that is absolutely 100% remotely offensive. Crying shame and imo Channel 4 were wrong. The sacking (because that's what is was) and the following legal battle, as good as finished him. Never be forgotten by many though. Never see his like again. Shame

TMM...….he was an atheist so there little reason to bring religion into it.He didn't believe in an old man in the sky garbage.

Spoke to him at a dinner in London.

He knew racing inside out. Knew all the scams and the scammers.
Think he played on c4 late night poker in the early days, was a big supporter of Greatwood Horse Charity
I was sad when he left channel 4 along with the rest of them, the new lot were terrible, I never watched Channel 4 racing
after that.
It took him a while to accept it. But I hope he did eventually, and had some peace before he died.
