Chinese border police are secretly installing surveillance apps on the phones of visitors and downloading personal information as part of the government’s intensive scrutiny of the remote Xinjiang region, the Guardian can reveal.

The Chinese government has curbed freedoms in the province for the local Muslim population, installing facial recognition cameras on streets and in mosques and reportedly forcing residents to download software that searches their phones.

An investigation by the Guardian and international partners has found that travellers are being targeted when they attempt to enter the region from neighbouring Kyrgyzstan.

Border guards are taking their phones and secretly installing an app that extracts emails, texts and contacts, as well as information about the handset itself.

Tourists say they have not been warned by authorities in advance or told about what the software is looking for, or that their information is being taken.

The investigation, with partners including Süddeutsche Zeitung and the New York Times, has found that people using the remote Irkeshtam border crossing into the country are routinely having their phones screened by guards.

The weather app on your android phones collects the exact longitude/latitude data of your phone's locations AT ALL TIMES and stores it at Google. That is how the weather app gives you the current weather. You can have your location turned off and it would still track you. Google was taken to court for this and they changed the wording of turning the location off settings. SO basically they still track you with the weather app, which is only one example of apps that need your personal information to function(Google search is another).

The only surprising thing in this article is that they took someone's phone for an hour to install their app. They could smarten up and make people use a special border crossing app to scan a qr code and it could do the same thing for them.

They are the upcoming super power so people will have to get used to negative press about China. One day people will realize that China not conforming to western expectations actually neither matters nor makes them any worse than they already are. China doesn't even intend to convince us in the west that they are a free country. Yet we expect them to be like us, for whatever reason.

"While there is no evidence that the data is used to track people later in their journeys, the information it collects would allow the authorities to locate someone if used together with details of the phone’s location."

This is what every app does. And while Guardian, SZ, Bochum Uni and Cure53 couldn't find any evidence that the data is used to track people, the headline of the article is that china puts 'secret surveillance app' on your phone.

By that standard, every app on your phone is a secret surveillance app.

They are Facisto/Capitalists.

They're actually commies which is why the country is referred to as Communist China or Red China.

Between 2000 and 2017, Chinese GDP grew by 910% in constant-dollar terms. U.S. GDP, by contrast, grew by only 44% over the same time period. The greatest capitalist success story of the 21st century is a communist regime with an atrocious human-rights record. Every company wants to do business there: The profit motive means collaboration with the Party.

Communist capitalism.

Embrace profit with the backdrop of the communist principles of corruption and state control of the population.

China starts its citizens on 1,000 points. You will be watched nonstop,be listened to nonstop. If you have been a Good citizen and have done and said what the Government want you earn extra credit points but...if you say or do something that doesn't fit the rulebook, you lose points, cant leave the country, cant travel first class and downwards from there. So you have to live your life as they tell you to do.

And that dear friends is planned for you and I in the not to distant future, with 5G and smart meters working together to spy on you,a cashless society where you better say and do what they want otherwise when you go to the supermarket, suddenly none of your cards will work, then what do you go?Its Big Brother on steroids just like China.
Welcome to the New World Order.
