Britain's four-time champion Chris Froome has been ruled out of the Tour de France after a "very serious" crash.

Team Ineos rider Froome, 34, was taken to hospital with a reported broken femur after crashing before stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine on Wednesday.
"He crashed in the downhill section of the course at high speed. He hit a wall," team principal Dave Brailsford told France Televisions. "It'll take quite a long time before he races again."

The incident took place during a practice ride on Wednesday's 26.1km time-trial course in Roanne, France.

Brailsford said: "The ambulance came quickly. He's been taken care of and waits for a helicopter to be transferred to Lyon or Saint-Etienne.

"It's a very serious accident. Clearly, he won't be at the start of the Tour de France."  Sad

Froome was eighth overall in the Criterium after three stages of the eight-day race.

He would have been chasing a record-equalling fifth victory in the Tour, which starts in Brussels on 6 July.

Serious enough to be career ending? Will take a long time to recover after this.

Could be, need to consider what it will do to him mentally.
How would he approach downhill sections in the future, would he really push and have the same edge ?

Can't imagine that he would be content to continue if he thought he didn't have what it takes to be pushing for wins in Grand Tours.

Cyclists are way braver than the average joe gives them credit for.
Remember the horrific crash at the Rio Olympics, Dutch lady Annemiek Van Vleuten, I saw it live, frightening stuff.

Agree with Denzil.
Shouldn’t have taken the Ineos plastic shilling.

Annemiek van Vleuten suffered three fractured vertebrae and a concussion after a horrifying high-speed crash in the Olympic women’s road race on Sunday but the Dutch rider said she will be fine and was more disappointed at missing out on a medal.

Froome, 34, hit a wall at 60kmph when he took his hands off his handlebars to blow his nose, according to team principal David Brailsford.
The crash occurred before the stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine.

The Team Ineos rider has been airlifted to St Etienne University Hospital.

"Even though we all recognise the risks involved in our sport, it's always traumatic when a rider crashes and sustains serious injuries," said Brailsford.

"Chris had worked incredibly hard to get in fantastic shape and was on track for the Tour, which unfortunately he will now miss.

"One of the things which sets Chris apart is his mental strength and resilience - and we will support him totally in his recovery, help him to recalibrate and assist him in pursuing his future goals and ambitions."

Moral of story dunna wipe yer nose taking a hand off handlebar when descending @ 60 kph.
No matter how fast you are on a bike.

Snot rocket will suffice if yer cant wait to a more convenient placer.

Sounds alot worse than initial broken leg:
Froome is believed to have taken a hand off the bars of his TT bike to blow his nose when he was caught by a gust of wind and was carried into a low wall, causing the crash.

After being taken to hospital in Roanne, where the time trial started and finished, Froome was found to have suffered multiple injuries including a fractured right femur and right elbow, and fractured ribs.

More breaking news (no pun intended this time). Sounds like he might be awarded the 2011 vuelta, Cobo DQ'd. What a difference a day makes.

Worth remembering in case it comes up in a quiz in 20 years time, who broke his leg and won a grand tour the next day?

Nice to see the biological passport working in a timely efficient fashion.

The UCI did not state what banned substance Cobo is believed to have taken, because the positive was found indirectly through his biological passport.

The passport is an electronic record for each rider, in which the results of all doping tests are collected and collated over a period of time, so any abnormalities caused by doping can be detected.

Chris Froome could be crowned the winner of the 2011 Vuelta a España after Juan José Cobo has been caught doping.

The UCI has announced that the former Movistar rider was found guilty of doping from 2009 and 2011, based on abnormalities in his biological passport.

Retired rider Cobo has been banned for three years after the UCI’s Anti-Doping Tribunal ruled he had committed an anti-doping rule violation.

Cobo was the winner of the 2011 Vuelta ahead of Froome (then Sky Procycling), with Spanish media reporting that he will be stripped of the victory.

The 38-year-old can appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and has one month to do so.
