Christel Stainfield-Bruce, 36, was approached by a teenager in Islington, north London, on Friday afternoon who initially asked her for directions.
He then said "give me your phone" and after she said "no" he stabbed her in the thigh before fleeing empty-handed.
The Met said no arrests had been made.
Officers said the suspect was 5ft 3in tall black male of large build, wearing dark-coloured clothing, including a jacket and trucker-style cap.

I doubt they could describe him as a small fat youth, might hurt his feelings.

She was treated in hospital for a stab wound to her leg and was told she was lucky the knife had missed an artery.
Ismail Musa, 26, of Tollington Road, was charged with causing GBH with intent.

Now he is 26, it must surely be mental health issues. A failed mugging and pointless stabbing: what else could it be? He's clearly not a hardened criminal; it makes no sense as a terrorist act. Another triumph for care in the community.
Two boats containing 40 migrants, including children, have been intercepted off the Kent coast.
