I'm thinking of buying a treadmill, with auto incline and varying speeds, for indoor walking and perhaps a little jogging, nothing heavy mind, just for general fitness. I've tried the bike but that keeps giving me a sore crotch so I'm changing tactics. I don't mind spending a few hundred pounds either. I would also prefer to hear from people who actually have one that they're pleased with and can recommend.

TIA

That's what I want a treadmill for, to build up for it. I am so unfit!!!

Ive got one, use it most days
I wouldnt buy a cheap one though for a few hundred, I spent 1500 on one, sturdy thing loads of features done thousands of miles on it and never a slight problem with it

The only thing is if you use one a lot you develop muscle strain in certain areas because its artificial unlike running on uneven surfaces that makes the muscles vary to balance etc

Plus the bed has a slight spring to it so you dont pound down hard like you would outside

Good information there dusty, very much appreciated. Initially my aim is to do some strong walking, with incline, with the intention of building up enough stamina to walk to the town and back. Today, I'd barely make it to the end of the street. Would that still give muscle strain do you think?

Aspro..had to give up running 4 yrs ago due to worn out hip

bought a York X730 X trainer(50 kgs in weight) for £ 85 on Gumtree

best money i've ever spent..real good workout
stay off hard surfaces if you do get out eventually

Depends how long and how fast you were walking in the same position, you can change the incline auto or manual, sometimes if Im doing a fast walk I develop a strain in the groin from pushing off the backfoot, but thats only if Im on it too much

The best thing about them is you can just jump on em for 15 mins or you can have a real difficult setting and no fu cker is laughing at you half collapsing in the street cos you cant get up the hill

More good information, thanks for that Johnny. As mentioned, I don't think I'll be doing any serious jogging but it would be nice if I could have a walk to the town and back a few times a week.

Looking to do one 15 minute session per day, Monday to Friday and then build to either 30 minutes or 2 x 15 minutes

Only a mile or two, but a lot of incline, which I used to do no problem but age, health and lack of fitness has caught up with me

Always amazes me when seeing these idiots jogging to work and home through rush hour, sucking in vast lungfuls of toxic vehicle fumes.

Being downhill on the way home is a huge bonus, because another intention is to walk there several times per week for fresh produce in Morrisons, so I'll be carrying more weight on the way home

You need some exercise to keep you from getting too soft, but not a lot.
Simply walking for a few hours a week is enough in most cases.

Diet is of far more importance, no amount of exercise will compensate for a poor diet.
And if you're well overweight you'll probably do more harm than good with vigorous exercise.

Pissing it down all day today so I didn't walk anywhere at all. Doesn't feel right.

Just took up Cycling this week bought a seat cover plus padded shorts and pants for the seat,as you say far kinder on your joints than running which otherwise defeats the objective of getting healthier and fitter.
Nearly bought a bike last year but have had ongoing back/hip issues tested on a stationary bike for a few weeks and was fine so committed, had 1 ride did an hour of intervals not too bad the next day.

Yeah I love going for a cycle ride now I cant believe how stoopid I was running 5 days a week for over 20 Years...It's a no brainer when you think about it.

I swim a couple of times a week, no great effort involved. But I do walk there and back.

I haven't seen a chap I speak to there for about a year now, he'd done his back in the gym last time we spoke.

How daft is that?

People are foolish when it comes to lifting lots of ego involved, they call it the Health and Fitness industry yet almost all the Youtube gurus are on drugs and the young kids (mainly) buying their programmes and products are getting conned.
Older guys trying to prove they can do what they did in their youth which of course you can't unless you're on drugs no sense whatsoever risking injury of any kind.
