D Day 75

Well I am glad they got the original on the right day.

Maybe it is because of the Trump visit, this is the only day he can attend, because of other commitments????

There will be a similar event in Normandy tomorrow

Because they are commemorating it in France tommorow and even with 75 years of techonlogical advances, they can't in two places at once?

Difficult for people to be in two places at once and two days of media coverage may be seen as better than one

original d day was planned for 5 june but eisenhower delayed it because of bad weather

Caught a bit of the commemoration (or at least was listening to it), it must've been running a bit late as I never heard first 2 flypasts as music playing.
Shame, half of the fun of a spitfire (and lancaster?) flypast is the Merlins!

My favourite part so far wasn't the speeches etc, it was seeing the 95 year old + veterans playing with the modern guns and military vehicles on the news, the young men in them was twinkling in their eye :)

D Day flypast from Duxford to Caen-Capriquet Airport in Normandy should be worth a watch if you are on the route. The 35 planes will now leave Duxford between 3.10pm and 3.24pm, flying at about 1500ft over Colchester around 3.40pm, Southend around 3.48pm, Maidstone at 3.56pm and Eastbourne at 4.09pm.

it is indeed great to see them still enjoying their lives, having risked all for us all.

Was there this morning and just got back. Very nicely organised and a fine tribute to the veterans.

Had the flypast of Dakota's, Mustangs, etc, go right over my bungalow around 16:00 this afternoon.

I watched the fairly good and respectful One Show coverage of the events today and it finished, so I switch over to C4 news.

Just in time for them to use D-Day and the veterans to attack Brexit. Is there NOTHING these pr1cks won't stoop to to push this?

Very moving scenes and stories. You can barely conceive that extraordinary events like this, and the Dunkirk Evacuation took place.

At 06:26 BST - the exact minute the first British troops landed on the beaches in 1944 - a lone piper played on a section of the Mulberry Harbour in the town of Arromanches.

The British Normandy Memorial is being built on a hillside overlooking Gold Beach - one of the key sites for British troops during the D-Day landings.

Once completed, it will record the names of the 22,442 members of the British armed forces who died.



Two veterans - Harry Read, 95, and John Hutton, 94, - parachuted back into Normandy, 75 years after their first landing.

This time, they jumped in tandem with members of the Army's Parachute Regiment display team, the Red Devils - and were greeted by cheers.

sky ,bbc etc presenters far younger than me spouting shoite about everyone has relatives they've talked to about d day, its a miniscule amount of people who had direct access to people involved
