Why do people keep pedalling this myth about the constant fear of “privatisation” of the NHS?

Government departmentsts including the Civil Service, Education, local councils, armed forces, Police & NHS do not make/produce anything & everything is supplied/provided by the private sector, from ballpoint pens to tanks, all paid for by Private sector employees & employers taxation!

The MSM rarely question/scrutinise procurement, the biggest failure (over many years) of successive governments. Quite bizarre considering the incredible buying power of the NHS (the fifth largest employer on the Planet!) & the vast quantities of equipment/supplies required daily/weekly/annually.

This is one of the obsession with our national religion, the NHS.

We need to decide what the NHS about, via a Royal Commission.

Is it the government providing health care, where it makes the drugs, builds the equipment, etc or is it a national service providing the best health care possible regardless of where it comes from while ensuring it is free (well, taxpayer funded) at the point of use?

If what's being proposed is a USA trade deal that will not end the concept of "free at the point of use" and that we all must get health insurance, merely that USA companies should be allowed to provide treatments and if those treatments cure people then why should they not be used?

The US companies that charge diabetics hundred of dollars a month will sue the nhs for losses when insulin is prescribed free.  This was the big argument against TTIP.

A bit of 'whataboutery' but the massive Class A lawsuits that can be filed against 'Big Pharma USA' is arguably a huge incentive for them to ensure they do what they say they are going to do and not try playing fast and loose with systtems, costs and standards?

What?

https://fullfact.org/europe/does-ttip-mean-privatisation-nhs/

Market access means that monopolies must be abolished. These include public services that are provided by the state or by a limited number of suppliers—like the NHS. If the EU or an individual government doesn't want to open its public services to wider competition, it must specify that they’re not covered.

This was the US dealing with Europe - why should they change when dealing with the UK?

The US ambassador said NHS would have to be part of the agreement.  Trump is a lying buffoon so what he says doesn't matter.

Report crystalhunt June 5, 2019 11:48 PM BST
Wouldn't have to do with under funding and cutbacks would it? Waiting lists were much shorter before Cameron got in and that is a fact.
Report timbuctooth June 6, 2019 12:11 AM BST
It`s quite simple; instead of paying NHS contributions every week, you put the cash into private insurance. Hey presto, no `underfunding and  cutbacks`, no waiting lists, no being fobbed off with what the state deigns to begrudgingly provide. Instead, the very finest providers vie for your custom, with the resultant good old fashioned competition benefiting every patient. Don`t believe what your elite tell you, the NHS is not the envy of the world, the proof being that no one else has done the same, made the same obvious mistakes, knowing no state can do anything efficiently.

What timbuctooth wants for Britain

The human cost of insulin in America

For most of us, our bodies produce insulin naturally. But for Type 1 (T1) diabetics like Ms Marston, insulin comes in clear glass vials, handed over the pharmacy counter each month - if they can afford it.

One vial of the insulin Ms Marston uses now costs $275 (£210) without health insurance.

In 1923, the discoverers of insulin sold its patent for $1, hoping the low price would keep the essential treatment available to everyone who needed it.

Now, retail prices in the US are around the $300 range for all insulins from the three major brands that control the market.

Even accounting for inflation, that's a price increase of over 1,000%.

Stories of Americans rationing insulin - and dying for it - have been making national headlines.

The most famous case, perhaps, was 26-year-old Alec Smith, who died in 2017 less than a month after he aged out of his mother's health insurance plan. Despite working full-time making more than minimum wage, he could not afford to buy new insurance or pay the $1,000 a month for insulin without it.

So, as you can see, average payments of about $250 a month, which is about £200, so less than £50 a week. How much do you pay the NHS a week from your NI contributions? The big difference is that The Land Of The Free leaves you alone to decide for yourself if you want to pay for insurance, or whether you`d rather spend your own money otherwise, rather than have Nanny nick it, in order to squander chunks of it on administration, bureaucracy and assorted inefficiencies. Divert your NI dosh to private, and you get rid of waiting lists, second-rate treatments, days sitting on gurneys waiting for a bed, etc, etc
You choose!
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 6, 2019 1:16 PM BST
What if you can't afford £50 per month? Plenty can't. Do we just let pensioners, children of the unemployed or disabled, people who have recently been made redundant etc just rot?

Is that the plan? Do we have our own stories of people being knocked over begging passers by not to call an ambulance as it'll bankrupt them.

Just wondering.
Report dave1357 June 6, 2019 1:18 PM BST

NI doesn't just pay for the NHS.  And in any case your figures ignore that families pay much more and there are $1000s in deductibles that the insured have to pay.  You also ignore the extra charges for pre-existing conditions and the elderly.

So crap from timbuctooth as per
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 6, 2019 1:18 PM BST
And are US firms any less inefficient? Do they not pay millions out to managers, admin staff, lobbyists, salesmen?

Or are they in fact much more inefficient because they are in fact businesses tasked with improving the bottom line, rather than simply running a service to help sick people.
Report dave1357 June 6, 2019 1:23 PM BST

Report The Management June 6, 2019 2:32 PM BST
The idea that competition results in lower prices is laughable - look at the state of the industries that were privatised in this country - Gas, Electric, Water, Telecoms, Trains, etc.

State run monopolies (inefficient as they were) have been replaced by privately owned cartels that are equally inefficient.

Despite unimaginable advances in technology (allowing these businesses to shred their costs and their requirement for personnel) - these businesses are able to rig their prices artificially high because the services they provide are essential for (modern) life! ... as is healthcare. You can charge what you like for the latest piece of shiny plastic "must have" sh!t because I can choose to buy it or not - but in any civilised country, government should have a role in the provision of all things that are essential to their citizens.
