Back in 1993, Pat Eddery had the pick of two runners in the Derby.
His choice was between the Henry Cecil and Khalid Abdullah pair Tenby and Commander In Chief - seemed straightforward enough.
Unbeaten in five starts, including a comfortable win in York's Dante Stakes, Tenby was sent off the 4-5 favourite at Epsom, and carried punters' and Eddery's - hopes.
The ride aboard Commander In Chief went to Mick Kinane, but Eddery's reject also had an unblemished record going into the Derby - he was three from three, including a neck win in the Glasgow Stakes at York with Eddery onboard.
But as Tenby failed to fire in 10th, Commander In Chief easily beat Blue Judge., before going on to triumph in the Irish Derby.
Rachel Johnson, sister of Boris, joined the Liberal Democrats in 2017, abandoning the Conservative Party over Brexit.
She considered running in the 2017 General Election, but was barred under party rules having been a member for less than the required twelve months.
Fancying another go at being a MP, she joined Change UK and put herself forward as a candidate for the EU elections.
She quickly realised that Change UK was, perhaps not what she expected, having the good grace and humour to state that she was "a rat that jumped on to a sinking ship".
Still, she stood as a Change UK candidate, and, watching the results come in, realised that, like Pat, she had chosen the wrong horse.
Most unfortunate, but she can at least look forward to an invite to a champagne reception at No. 10 once big brother picks up the keys from Theresa.

By the way, Commander In Chief was a BIG winner for me.
I'd backed him in his maiden, with Eddrey on board, then set about placing numerous ante post bets and a big top up on the day where he went off at 8/1. |

Chuka has been keeping a low profile hasn't he? Saw way wind was blowing and decided to hide and hope people forgot he was in it and indeed pretty much started the collosal failure? |

Nearly same topic, remember one of my earliest bets, in a crooks with no tv , just comms. Backed a Cecil second string in the 16-1 bar category. P1ssed in at 50-1

Some of us can pick the political bits from this, others the horse racing bit.
I remember having Tenby in most of my lists in the 10 to follow competition that year.... I was over the moon with the potential points it was going to bring me and was mentally counting my winnings as soon as I saw the ante-post prices. Tenby was very disappointing. |

I used to love the way Eddery would spend the first six months of every season getting hampered, outridden and easing down everything he rode. Then, come September, there'd always be a line in the paper about how Eddery was on the 90-winner mark, and how he was looking forward to riding a century of winners yet again.
I can't recall him ever riding more than about three winners a season, yet year-in year-out he'd parachute himself onto the 90-winner mark in the autumn, and everyone just assumed it must be true. A century of beaten favourites? That I could believer. But winners? No way. |

Always looked to see who Eddery was on.
Googled this - 11 times champion jockey. In light of this new evidence I expect him to be stripped of all honours. |

Whenever I think of Eddery, the picture I have in my mind is of something in red and yellow halved colours of John Dunlop's being given too much to do, getting hampered, then finishing full of running. Usually at a short price. And winning for someone else nest time out.
Persian Lightning was a good one. First time in a nursery, thrown in off a rating of 72, backed down to 4/1, P Eddery up: Took keen hold early, held up rear, not clear run 3f out, nudged along and staying on when hampered 1f out, never near leaders (op 9-2 tchd 5-1) The horse ended up winning half a dozen races and rated 108. |

Pat Edderys worst ride ever in the Derby was on Silver Patriarch. Last round Tattenham corner, lost to Benny the Dip by a whisker on the line, five feet beyond the line was ahead of Benny. Yes, I am talking through my pocket.

You beat me to the punch TheCoat, I was on Silver Patriach as well and Eddery manged somehow to get it beat by Benny The Dip ridden by Willie Ryan by a nose, I was absolutely going nuts after that race
