I'm told that my ideal weight should be 12.5 stone. I'm currently a little over 16 (was 17) and I accept that I'm overweight, however; at 12.5 I look ill and old! When I hit around the 14 stone mark I was told by others that I looked well and healthy. Why would I want to lose weight to be within BMI when it makes me look so bad?
Over to you Dr C

I honestly admire him. Shrewd businessman who has made millions from life`s thickos.
Loves his racing and occasionally posts on the forum but I forget his nom de plume.

That's fine Aspro, be sure to leave instructions for a mirror to be packed in your coffin.

Nature gives us the ability to put on fat for the day when there's no food to be had. The trouble is that day never comes, so we carry the fat around with us.
Imagine carrying two to three stone of food around with you in a holdall, in case you run out.
No wonder slim people have usually got spring in their steps.

Fairly sure your body likes to keep fat where its most useful and surrounding your organs so they don't get cold, having in a place that doesn't affect movement is a better place than away from organs on extremities that will affect movement? So it'll burn the crap fat first. Older peoples skin gets "thinner" with I think less fat under it, which is why you see collagen vitamin supplements to try and thicken the tissue up. Women tend to store fat lower down and more in their legs and arse and under their skin, men it tends to be higher up in the body, but as the visceral fat where men store it is bad for heart disease etc thats why fat men tend to have heart attacks more often.
What is also interesting but I only found out recently is just how much more fat women store than men to be healhy, it's like double the % body weight. A woman at the same % body weight as a man might look fantastically fit but the man quite podgy, if a woman go her body weight % to that of a "ripped" man she'd be unhealthy and ill.
Of course if a man wants to prevent heart disease he can just SAY he's a woman and biology will revert all the above, and anyone who denies this is trasngenderist fascist who can expect to be kicked off off twitter for hate speech, and fired from their job.

There are those that dispute that BMI is accurate. I would rather look fit and healthy than gaunt and old, even if it does strip a year or two off my life expectancy.
At present I'm trying to lose weight with circa 13.5-14.5 being my own personal target... but I take your point.

"There are those that dispute that BMI is accurate." Including the guy who invented the damned thing, AFAIK he said when he came up with it not to misuse it, it's totally misused. A fit strong athletic guy with a fair bit of muscle and a big frame with broad shoulders could be rated as pretty much obsese when he's got very low body fat and healthy as you like, but a thin framed guy with little muscle who never exercises could be obviously carrying bad fat and be rated as healhy.
It's by definition a flawed system. It's calculated linearly. Your weight will not go up linearly with height as you are not something to be modelled as a cylinder of fixed radius being extended along its axis, you are to some extent spherical. To the mathematically / engineering / science inclined that alone must be another huge alarm bell. There is a NEW bmi calculator that tries to do it in a more complicated but more accurate manner.
But it still doesn't fix the "muscular athlete vs beer bellied scrawny alcholic" issue.

Assuming you are about 6 foot 3 then 12.5 stone is pretty much bang in the middle of "healthy " according to this BBC calculator. 14 stone still is just about in their "healthy " zone.
So doubt there will be too many major health risks being over your "ideal" weight.
Of course if you are actually 4foot tall then 14 stone is not that great.

Just checked out JC's link. Yes, I'm currently considered obese under the new system but still lower than the old BMI
At 13.5 stone (best target weight) I am fractionally above normal on overweight, but still not obese at the higher target (14.5)… interesting

Take off your clothes, stand in front of the mirror and relax.
If you can't see your ribs you're carrying extra weight.

PS I'll correct myself as I made a feck up there. Stephen Hawking just mailed me to laugh, and I'm very embarrassed . It's not calculated linearly as I said but also it wasn't calculated to model your growth in 3 dimensions so the new system attempts to fix that. If you very simply think of say your body as a sphere and increase its radius, the forumla is .... 4/3 * PI * diameter^3, the important bit being it's diameter cubed as it's 3D. Your body isn't a sphere but it's certainly 3D so you can see why doing a half way house (the new forumla is to ^ 2.5) helps the maths.
I'd imagine if you had the build of the stay puft marshmallow man, using a cube would be the correct thing to do .

I just thought "well who is an athletic famous actor, what's their height / weight", chose the guy who played captain america, got his stats off the interweb, plug them in, and he's BMI 26 and overweight and at risk of health problems. Apparently. Given I have the same build you can see it's rubbish.

Blimey, 40 cigarettes a day is an incredibly high and dangerous amount of f@gs! My bmi is around 27/28 which suggests I'm overweight, maybe I could lose 3 or 4 kilos if I wanted to but I don't particularly want to!

I remember them slippy, they were very strong. Others which you don`t see now are Capstan and Woodbine. All the old Miners used to smoke them three brands.
If you don`t mind me asking slippy, what age was your Nan? The reason I ask is because my Uncle had a very similar habit but he smoked Capstan and he died aged 77.

My Dad's Mum was 82 when she passed Mac, Dad had 11 Sisters and 1 brother!! They had a farm in County Offaly and were self sufficient with raising livestock and crops and sold what they didn't need so they could to get by and pay the bills etc. Imagine having 11 Sisters, I've got one and she is a right pain in the derriere!

82 was a great age for that generation slippy, especially a heavy smoker. What a wonderful life they must have had living off the land, although probably very hard work.
Your dad must have had a great time as a teenager when his eleven sisters brought all their friends around
