The West Country's the place to be.

We've got not just the nicest weather and the most beautiful landscapes, but also the most entertaining list of candidates. Lord Adonis will be trading blows with Sargon of Akkad, while Ann Widdecombe grapples Boris Johnson's sister; and Larch Maxey of the Ecological Land Cooperative is presumably looking for votes from the tree community. Could split the Green Party vote, with the latter represented by a candidate registered as 'Molly' Scott Cato, which is presumably someone's dog.

There are also, I suppose, Conservative and Lib Dem candidates. But who cares about them?

This was done earlier in the week (poll of polls) and leaving out Con and labour and adding Farage's Folly with UKIP against the remain parties gives something like 36-37.5% to the remain parties, in other words, just like the ref a very close result. Either way, the results of this election should have as much bearing as the LIbdems success did in the local elections - i.e it means feck all, unless maybe one side gets 60% which won't happen.
Report n88uk May 23, 2019 9:52 AM BST
Bearing on Brexit that is true. And you'd be right to say most people are voting for that reason. But in reality you should be voting the best people to represent you in the European parliament, you can't moan about having a lack of say if you then vote for people you know won't turn up.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves May 23, 2019 9:55 AM BST
The LibDem successes in the local elections do mean something if you've found yourself lumbered with them. The next time some chancer from the Smoke wants to plaster 100 acres of Somerset with solar panels, it'll get nodded through.Sad

I'll say one thing, after donating yesterday to a political party for the first time ever: having spent a pony registering as a Brexit Party supporter, I'm motivated to walk to the polling station today in a way I never felt in all the years I voted Labour pre-Corbyn.
Report Jack Hacksaw May 23, 2019 9:56 AM BST
I should imagine the majority of people voting for Brexit are presuming that the referendum decision will be implemented as per the pledges of our elected leaders.
Report n88uk May 23, 2019 10:53 AM BST
At which point they've made a bad vote. Either Brexit happens and the vote doesn't matter or it does and you've elected people who won't turn up and represent you and these same types will then moan about a lack of influence in the EU.

Of course this would involve seeing the need for a plan B, and it seems most Brexiteers don't have a plan A.
Report alun2005 May 23, 2019 11:06 AM BST
I would definitely recommend using a marker pen on the ballot paper when you cast your vote, whoever you vote for.

Miscreants could still of course 'spoil' you ballot paper, but it is at least a small security measure which would make it difficult for persons to alter your vote to that of another party.

Remember, there are constituencies in this country which have had problems in recent years with electoral fraud, so always try your best to circumvent this where you can.

There is of course one political party (in particular their Leader) which actually goes into this election with the recent endorsement of an Islamist Fundamentalist group. It beggars belief, but that party's leader has done nothing of substance to disassociate or distance him and his party from this group.

So if no strong message is sent - say 'Brexit' polls around 40% of a very low turnout (again less than 40%) then the opposite message that you wish to be has been sent surely? It doesn't matter the amount of seats they get but the amount of votes they get - it doesn't really matter (for your purposes) how many 'the others' get as brexiters are the only ones that give a feck about these elections - which has a certain degree of irony!

job security for life, housing security for life, free education (esp further) and health and security/prosperity

I had two jobs at the end of the 1980s, translating patents and medical texts, the first paid £8500 pa, the second £6500 pa. Gave up and went punting on the racecourse instead, because otherwise I'd have been renting for life on those wages. The eighties property boom was brutal for those of us without rich parents or a desire for insane mortgages. Haven't had any employment or claimed any benefits since.

I wish my house, and everybody's houses, were worth a quarter of what they currently are, so I could move somewhere nicer. But while the younger generation are willing to borrow and pay as much as they possibly can for property, and have that facilitated for them by money-printing and zero per cent interest rates, I haven't got a hope.

I was the only person in my family, in fact on my whole estate, ever to go on to higher education. That was the reason university education was free back then: hardly any of my generation were allowed into it. And those of us who were granted access were restricted to the hard subjects, such as maths, physics and modern languages. If you graduated in 1983, as I did, you entered a brutal recession, with an unemployment rate of 12%. It took me two years to find work after graduating, and that was with a 2:1 in modern languages and experience of working abroad.

Now you have an unemployment rate of 3.8%.

Yet you're still seething, and feel helpless about it. Whatever the reason, it's not down to lack of opportunities or domestic policies.

The vast majority of people on zero-hours contracts don't actually want or need more work. They do it because it suits them.

Newer figures are available from the ONS covering the period from April to June 2018. They show that 72% of people on a zero hours contract expressing a preference said they didn’t want more hours, or 63% of everyone on the contracts (including the unknowns).

The average person on a zero hours contract in mid-2018 usually worked about 25 hours per week, compared to an average of 36 hours for everyone in employment.

https://fullfact.org/economy/how-many-people-zero-hours-contracts-want-more-hours/

Re immigration and house prices: for someone to complain about high house prices at the same time as promoting membership of the EU is confusing, to say the least. Even in the year to Sept. 2018, official net immigration from the EU was 57,000. In the previous year the figure was 192,000! That's a quarter of a million extra people to be housed (and cared for and educated) in two years. That's a city the size of Wolverhampton.

https://fullfact.org/immigration/eu-migration-and-uk/

I don't notice a second Wolverhampton being built in the last couple of years (and nor should it be).

Report screaming from beneaththewaves May 23, 2019 5:43 PM BST
The trouble with giving people 25-hour contracts is that you have to be 100% sure you can find 25 hours' worth of work for them to do every single week without fail.

If you're running a business where orders and work fluctuates depending on factors outside your control, then zero-hours contracts allow you to take on business which you would otherwise have to turn down, or win business which you otherwise wouldn't owing to the cost of employing workers to do it on long-term contracts.

Basically, you can supply people with work which otherwise wouldn't exist.

On the other hand, you can indeed try to employ people on zero-hour contracts which are basically full-time ones without the benefits. But in an economy with a 3.8% unemployment rate, you're not going to be able to hold on to them for very long.
Report donny osmond May 23, 2019 5:53 PM BST
i can understand why some folk want zero hours, and why they are useful to employers if used properly as
you detail in your post....no real problems with that

some employers , however , abuse the system with all employees on zero hour contracts.

there are many in uk, and its a growing trend, so 3.8% unemployment is not a natural deterrent
Report screaming from beneaththewaves May 23, 2019 6:28 PM BST
Yes, donny. No doubt that there are employers who are definitely taking the p1ss on workers' rights through zero-hours contracts (hello, Mike Ashley). The question is, how are they getting away with it in a nation with essentially full employment? (You never get 0%, as there are always some people between jobs.)

Well, having a limitless pool of cheap labour to call on from southern and central Europe certainly helps. Particularly if their own cost of living back home enables them to stick poor living and working conditions in the UK, yet go home later feeling wealthy.

It's all part of how the single EU market has enabled big business to transfer risk to smaller ones, and ultimately to employees. The just-in-time supply chain is another example of this. Someone, somewhere has to store parts and pay the associated costs. That someone always used to be the big-business end user. They bought parts from local suppliers and paid to warehouse them for when needed.

Now those big corporations can find a site in Romania which will build and supply the parts (and, most importantly, store them for delivery at a moment's notice) for a fraction of the cost, transferring all the risk to themselves, and able to do so because they're paying their local staff bugger all.

That's my argument: that the EU is a system to circumvent local protections which economics traditionally ensure for the little guy, by opening up opportunities for the big guys to screw over people elsewhere. Quite why the Left is so pro-EU is beyond me.

lots of stuff gets blamed on eu, single market, etc, but folk were outsourcing to
eastern europe before countries were in eu, and the outsourcing to china is longterm
with little chance of china joining eu. labour has flowed into uk since last world war
to help us expand. migration from outside eu is controlled, or can be, but it seems
to have increased since brexit vote, as net flow from eu has reduced. migration figures
are freely available to back that up.

Report screaming from beneaththewaves May 23, 2019 7:08 PM BST
Yes, donny. Building a new city the size of Wolverhampton every couple of years, just for the immigration form the EU alone, isn't only a case of building a hundred thousand or more new homes. It's also building the new hospitals and schools and providing free healthcare and education. And roads and railways to access them. It hasn't happened. And I don't believe it should. Space, with room to move and air to breathe, is a precious thing, and you can't put a price on it.

I agree that globalization is a long-term thing, and not the result of EU membership alone. But there's no other form of globalization which is so straightforward for big business to take advantage of, and definitely no other form which is completely impossible to control. If the UK authorities felt that working practices in Roumania were disadvantaging workers in the UK, there's absolutely nothing a UK government could do about it. Whether Trump-style tariffs and sanctions are right or wrong as a way to combat perceived unfairness, the fact is we couldn't apply them to EU nations, even if voters wanted them.

One reason for that, of course, is that the EU has cunningly transferred responsibility for tariffs from businesses onto the consumer. Taxpayers pay outrageous sums to Brussels, in return for which businesses get tariff-free trade.
