Jamie Oliver restaurant empire collapses, risking 1,000 jobs
.

Jamie Oliver’s restaurant empire is calling in administrators, putting more than 1,000 jobs at risk.

The company, which includes 23 Jamie’s Italian outlets, plus the Fifteen and Barbecoa restaurants in London and Jamie’s Diner at Gatwick airport, said KPMG would be appointed as administrator.

Oliver said: “I am deeply saddened by this outcome and would like to thank all of the staff and our suppliers who have put their hearts and souls into this business for over a decade. I appreciate how difficult this is for everyone affected.

“I would also like to thank all the customers who have enjoyed and supported us over the last decade, it’s been a real pleasure serving you.

“We launched Jamie’s Italian in 2008 with the intention of positively disrupting mid-market dining in the UK high street, with great value and much higher quality ingredients, best-in-class animal welfare standards and an amazing team who shared my passion for great food and service. And we did exactly that.”

The administration could mark the end of Oliver’s UK restaurant empire, which began with the opening of Fifteen in London in 2002.

His brand is taking a hammering.
Report Whisperingdeath May 21, 2019 1:04 PM BST
He has  lost a lot personally. He makes so much money that I don't think he will suffer except for his pride. He tried to do something good and it went wrong. Good luck to him for that.

The only real downside is that ventures likes his pushed up rental prices and many food chains are paying astronomical rents now. It was the buzz industry for these gamers to get into at one point.

These celebrity chef's seem to make hopeless business people.

Jamie is not the first one to go bust.

I think one problem is people expect to see the celebrity chef at the restaurant, and he cannot be everywhere.

Administrators appointed to Jamie Oliver’s restaurant empire have closed all but three of the company’s restaurants, in a move that will see around 1,000 employees lose their jobs.

The company, which includes 22 Jamie’s Italian restaurants in the UK as well as the celebrity chef’s Fifteen and Barbecoa restaurants, on Tuesday appointed accounting firm KPMG as administrator.

“Unfortunately, with insufficient funds available to be able to trade the business in administration, all but the Gatwick airport restaurants have now closed,” joint administrator Will Wright, a partner in KPMG, said in a statement.
Report tictacman1 May 21, 2019 3:54 PM BST
Over the course of several months in 2017 and 2018, the chef was forced to inject almost £13m of his own money into the company to save it from bankruptcy.

Discussing that move, the celebrity chef said a “perfect storm” had brought his restaurant chain to the brink, blaming a combination of high rents, rates, food costs, a decline of the high street, Brexit, and the increase in the minimum wage.

Last year, the group sold five of its Australian restaurants in a last-minute rescue deal, while a sixth was forced to close.

The minimum wage probably is to blame though

Simple economics will tell you everytime the minimum wage goes up the companies are forced into raising the cost of their goods, ending up meaning no one can afford to buy it

We are consumer economy after all, if no one is buying anything then its not good

The stock market is still rising though so it all good ...

How can any business blame the minimum wage?

Pathetic!

If you can't afford to pay someone £8 or whatever it is an hour maybe your business is not worth bothering with!. WHo on minimum wage lives in their own house? Who on minimum wage at least rents their own place? How many on minimum wage have to share accommodation?

What a society we live in. Go into any restaurant in central London and you will find foreigners serving. Nothing against them but what sort of life is it to live in multi share accommodation? I am glad these businesses fail if they can't afford to pay decent wages.

All true whispering, the tip situation in a lot of restaurants doesn’t favour the staff on low wages either.when I go out to eat these days always make sure I give the waiting staff a cash tip, putting it on the card is not likely to get back to those that deserve it.
Report Injera May 21, 2019 5:41 PM BST
Minimum wage in the south east is hopeless. Up north you can certainly live ok.

Oliver made no secret of his reliance on foreign labour. People who share accomodation and can just about afford to do low paid jobs in London.

We're a slave labour economy. Relying on cheap overseas labour who we expect to live 3 to a room Sad

To answer a question earlier in the thread .....

A spokesperson for the Jamie Oliver Group said: "The board of Jamie's Italian Limited has appointed Will Wright and Mark Orton of KPMG to put its UK-based restaurant business into administration.

Jamie Oliver Holdings, which operates Jamie Oliver Limited and Jamie Oliver Licensing Limited, as well as the international restaurant franchise business, Jamie's Italian International Limited, will continue to trade as normal.

Some very good points raised on this thread.

I returned to the UK in January, having spent the previous eleven years in Dubai.
There are more similarities in the operation of both economies than you may first imagine.

The most striking one is the use of non indigenous labour, many of whom are prepared to live in shared accommodation as part of their dream to create a better live for themselves and their families back home.

I spent the last few days of my time in Dubai in a hotel near the Deira City Centre mall.
Given that it was January, I was able to explore parts of the city on foot that I had scarcely ever visited.

In some areas, it was like I had walked from Dubai to Karachi and I saw countless discount stores that were open all hours and full of customers.

Return to the UK, and what are the busiest shops I see, it's the likes of Poundland and Home Bargains.
Another striking similarity.

As you go through life, your view of the world around you is highly dependant of the personal situation you find yourself in.
All too often, we are only able to appreciate other views when our personal circumstances change.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all be a bit less selfish, display a lot more empathy, and go out of our way to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
Report Whisperingdeath May 22, 2019 2:01 PM BST
Nicely put Angose. The bigotry, ignorance and lack of empathy for human beings displayed on these forums is shocking.
