Correct. A way of demonising the working class and getting the middle classes and even certain members of the working classes to turn on the poorest members of society.

I saw quite a bit of Benefits Street. I thought it was in the public interest myself and from what I recall sympathetically made and felt true to life. You can't compare it to the awful Jeremy Kyle show that is all about titllation and smugness at the expense of the guests

Regular programs on Tax avoidence and Tax evasion would also be true to life, but rarely made even though it's a bigger drain on the economy.

High rents and house prices are a real problem, that succesive governmanets have failed to tackle. It seems like as things stand it's like tackling a house fire with a few buckets of water.
Possibly 50-100 years ago people expected a lot less and the motivation was to build a future after the wars. Healthcare costs have also gone through the roof, which gets prioritised over house building. People vote short term, and governments think that way because of that, so spending on infrastructure is always an issue. |
