Yesterday at 2.30 pm i was on betfair site trying to win a few bob but as usual i run low on funds.i transferred a few quid from my bank account to betfair at 2.32 pm.Within the next hour 4 attempts were made to withdraw 4 different sums of money from my bank. The bank declined the 4 requests for money and blocked my account.2 more attempts to withdraw were made in the next 5 hours. The bank texted me last night and arranged a private phone call to me today.Today they told me i will be issued with a new debit card, new pin number within 3 to 5 days, the international fraud squad rang me this evening for more details.i was a lucky lad.A company from malaysia were doing the money requesting.how they got my bank details i do not know.i do not share my details with anybody.and i guess theire is no more to be said, other than you can not be too careful nowadays.
all the time, but always thought it was safe, but as i say i was lucky that the bank triggered that something strange was going on,as i did not know anything about it.

Looks like your system is compromised. If you don't install a fresh OS it'll most definitely happen again(assuming it was the betfair deposit that caused the trouble)

Best not to leave much in your debit account (just enough to be sure your standing orders/direct debits will clear)!
Having said that, of course, it could be a tidy sum, dependant on your lifestyle!
I guess when someone tries to dip it, they will start with a high sum, and reduce till they get a result!
How the hell they do it is a mystery to me, as it's hard enough to get into your own account!
I'm with Barclays for one account, and have had my payments at the tills rejected on four occasions.
In each case it was "Barclays Fraud Squad" citing 'unusual activity', and of course I was cross, and embarrassed, but I guess I should be thankful that there is some surveillance!

guys i only posted to let you know it happened to me,but i believe it is happening a lot more than we all hear about.in fact the people who do it have go very clever at their game.as i say i was lucky that the bank copped it. it would be a bad day for anyone who went into their bank account to find it cleaned out by some made up company on the other side of the world.

Around 10-15 years ago someone was taking plenty cash out of my credit card in Malaysia or Thailand. Never knew about it till the cc company rang me. The money was refunded to me on that first call and never heard about it again. Iirc think it was a replacement card that I never received.

Same thing happened to me years ago as a student, robbed of a few hundred quid when a new bank card that was issued went missing, cleaned me out as I couldn't withdraw the fare to afford to go to college - they didn't just withdraw the balance but the overdraft I had as well, remember staring at the cash point machine and that feeling I had, was a lot of money to me then.

They would have to put some money into my bank account before they could take any out

Rule #1 Never if at all possible use a debit card on the internet, use a credit card (which has more protections) and de-link your bank from the bad guys. In fact try not to use a debit anywhere apart from a machine imho. Someone tried to use my credit card details after a holiday a while ago and I'm fairly sure it was something to do with a shifty looking sh1tbag who took details off it in a hotel..

true in general, but if you use a CC for a gambling deposit it will be treated as a cash advance and you will be charged interest.

i did not say it had anything to do with the betfair deposit,i checked my bank account when i made the betfair deposit and all was well.i knew nothing that was going on,it world be very tough for some guy to have his life savings cleaned out in one afternoon. i have read threads about guys saying that their bank account was cleaned out ,but i never dreamed it would happen to me,i always thought things like this only happened to other people.as i say i was lucky ,but i got my warning and i will be more careful in the future, but i believe that the people who do it can get into any bank account the want to get into.i guess that life nowadays.

Another option then S_H (and anyone) is to get a cheap (or indeed free) debit card you "charge up". I might be getting one myself soon. Surely they whouldn't charged as credit at all so you just put what you feel ok with on them, then use knowing you can only lose max what is in it.
It's a funny thing though isn't it, in years gone by everyone used cheques and they had your sort + bank code + signature on them. I'm sure just a few years ago tills used to print out your ENTIRE card number on them! (no ****s).

the ****s there were meaning they hide 4 letter blocks of digits, not a swear word, but I'd quite like a till receipt that put random 4 letter sweary words instead of digits
