The sleeping giants now dominate the domestic game with Leeds United, Sheffield City (formerly Wednesday & United), Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Southampton joining the likes of Lancashire FC (formerly Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan, Burnley, Preston and Blackpool), Birmingham Wolves (formerly West Brom, Wolves, Birmingham City), Wales FC (formerly Wrexham, Swansea, Cardiff and Newport) as geographical franchises in the top division. This has led to many iconic stadiums being lost to development. In recent times, the likes of New York City, Sydney Athletic and Kaiser Chiefs have joined the English pyramid at second division level and are finding their feet. The FA Cup survives but is only open to non-members of the European Elite Leagues or the top 2 divisions of the EFL. Tranmere Rovers having won the last 3 competitions. The lower divisions of the leagues now also include non-geographical teams with companies and sections of societies fields teams. Prominent teams include Climate Change United, 3D Politics, Pride X1, The Christians, Soccer Aid FC, JP Morgan, Comparethemarket, The AA and Ocean Finance. |
