If you're in the NorthWest the weather my be affecting the signal. Or you could try rebooting the Sky box. Or maybe a neighbour's trees have grown and could be obstructing the signal.

Barrowboy, was the squarial the dish you recall? https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,,-185028,00.html
I got my first satellite dish for free. When the Today newspaper was going & sky just started, they had a competition, where you had to write a slogan. I was always quite proud of my winning entry - "It's the one dish the wife wont have to wash". I later read that the first received 10,000 entries won a free dish.
I got a zone 2 dish years ago, when I had intermittent signal problems in bad weather. It lead to better reliability. The zone 2 dishes are bigger & were designed for more remote areas, where the signal is not so strong.

"I'd have thought that all areas were as remote as each other...from space." You're not wrong. But if worded differently/accurately he has a point. Satellites sit geostationary down towards the equator (literally on perhaps, I think) and have a footprint and it's weaker the further north or away from the core signal. Further away, inferior angle passing through more atmosphere. So a bigger satellite dish IS more useful and may have a noticably better reception in say northern Scotland than one far closer at a better angle in say the Isle of Wight.
