Bowie wrote All The Young Dudes and also performed backing vocals. Rumour has it that he was sitting cross-legged on the floor of a room in London's Regent Street, in front of the band's lead singer, Ian Hunter when he wrote it.
Hunter was screaming at him, "hurry up man, the pub will be closing soon"

That’s awesome, Twiz. Love the drumming on that too.
Mustn’t get away from Mott though. Dudes one of my favs. One of the best choruses of all time. And in a way it’s a proper chorus because the “chorus” sing it and Hunter kinda raps. Love it.

I saw that gig at Newcastle City Hall Dan. "Mott the Hoople's Rockn'roll Circus". Max Wall was surprisingly good but we weren't there to see him. I think a band called Hackensack were the other support. It was before All the Young Dudes, which was a brilliant track, but it marked a move away from their hard rock profile towards a bit of glam which I didn't like. Ian Hunter's Diary of a Rock'n Roll Star is a good read.

Think he is 72, had only played in his living room for years before being asked to reform. I think he doubted his ability to perform again but was persuaded to give it a go at last years festivals, charisma takes you a long way and he is an engaging character.

I was out for a wander last night, and my iPod ran out of power so I listened to the FM radio on my phone instead for the first time ever. The first programme I listened to was Brain of Britain, which was very entertaining.
After that, I switched channels and caught the back end of an interview on Radio Scotland between host Billy Sloane and Mr Ian Hunter. Mott the Hoople had been in Glasgow for a gig at Barrowlands, a venue that Hunter revealed was on his bucket list.
Well worth tracking it down online.
A further bit of trivia was provided by Hunter regarding Bowie giving him all The Young Dudes. He informed us that Bowie had originally offered him Suffragette City but that he turned it down.
It was also clarified that Bowie did indeed write the song whilst sitting on the floor of a music publishers office whilst Hunter was present.
Apparently, Bowie liked to sit on the floor to undertake all manner of tasks, hence his lack of interest in taking up an offer from DFS to be their front man in a nationwide advertising campiagn.

when hunter left the hoople in 75 (I think) the remaining members formed their own band caled "MOTT" they produced two almbums . The first in 75 was entitled "Drive On " and is one of my favourite albums of all time. If you have not listened to it you should, there is a fantastic mixture of harder rock than the hoople, ballads and middle of the road catchy songs with great instrumental work. it is an imemnse piece ofwork that never received the recognition it should have. Their second album " shouting amd pointing " was not as good but still worth a listen. One track called "Rockn Roll, is really good and captures in my opinion a cross between Bowie and Floyd. Graet stusff. The album performed poorly and sadly it was their last.
I thought Mott were better without Hunter as it let the other band members be more creative and less focused on the front man,
If you have not listened top either album please do . You will not regret it
