most of the land is grass not doing much in the middle of knowhere where nobody wants to build given it's lack of amenities. People want to gravitate towards cities where there are better job prospects anyway.

I've read the article and after a whole 30 seconds' thought, I don't care. Most of it is countryside or farmland.

The angle not covered is that so much of our farmland is owned not by small farmers but by large companies who are raking in those lovely EU CAP subsidies, and who after Brexit will be raking in those UK government subsidies.

The title Duke of Buccleuch /bəˈkluː/, formerly also spelt Duke of Buccleugh, is a title created twice in the Peerage of Scotland. The second creation dates to the 20 April 1663. The Dukedom was for the Duke of Monmouth, who was the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II of Scotland, England, and Ireland, and who had married Anne Scott, 4th Countess of Buccleuch. The Duke also holds the Dukedom of Queensberry, created in 1684.

The current Duke of Buccleuch, Richard Scott, the 10th Duke, is the largest private landowner in Scotland and chairman of the Buccleuch Group, a holding company with interests in commercial property, rural affairs, food, and beverages. The title originally comes from a holding in the Scottish Borders, near Selkirk.

Actually, I would have thought it would have been a lot more than half the land owned a lot less than 1%, given that the Queen owns all of it.

We need some Zimbabwe style land reform. I for one am disgusted that stupid people who don't know how to farm are prevented from trying it. It's a disgrace that our economy is doing quite well, this must be stopped.

My comment was made tongue in cheek but I think you'll find that technically, the Queen owns all of it. And Australia. And New Zealand...

There is and never was a thing called "ozone".. The Lord is holding up his hand above us all for to protect his children from (alledgedly existing) super purple light (strange how nobody has ever seen this supposedly ultra purple light).

This ownership of land should be a major issue. There is a shortgage of housing. The prime cost of a home is the land, not the building. I could see how the Labour Party could solve a major problem but as usual they are not interested in housing, the Health Service, making the rich pay their fair share!
By:
Ramruma
When: 20 Apr 19 04:16
No, it should not be a major issue. Most of the land is not where anyone would want to live. There is a problem with landbanking by property developers but that's got sod all to do with who owns vast tracts of forests and moors.
