Douglas Murray has some interesting theories about how the fact modern art is so woefully sh1t, from memory he links it to the general demise and emptyness of western culture and our faith in ourselves to do anything good anymore, we've stopped trying. Above should be exhibit "A".
It's hard to compare the art lost / almost lost in say Notre Dame with the garbage modern "artists" churn out. You don't have to be catholic or believe in god at all to be impressed by a lot of religious art. |

There’s a US TV prog where people sell stuff to pawn shops (I think).
Yesterday some guy came in with a Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys’ old surf board ... valued at $200,000 and wanted $100,000 for it. Didn’t watch it to the end so don’t know how it panned out. Who in their right mind would pay more than a couple of bucks. FFS. |

One of the wealthiest living artists, Sean Scully, who's paintings sell for six figures has made a fortune out of these people. Have a gander at his paintings and tell me if a five year old couldn't replicate most of them.

I like Sean Scully's work a lot. I have one in the cloakroom and one facing you as you come down the stairs. They are not originals but are signed "in the block" prints and are worth about 20/30 times what I paid for them, not that that matters as they will never be sold (not by me anyway!!).

You shouldn`t live by the old "Who in their right mind" adage because there are a lot of individuals out there who are not in their right mind and who have more money than sense. There are also the speculators who understand that it`s not what something is really worth but what a fool and the sheep that follow are prepared to pay for it. Emperors new clothes and all that. Anyone who says a five year old could do Scullys stuff is spot on and anyone who talks about art appreciation and understanding concepts of art is talking from that place on their body where the sun don`t shine.

Reynard - I don't think it is as simple as that and I don't think it has much to do with refinement. Many famous painters were the antithesis of refinement after all.
I think people are just comfortable with.... well, simply what they are comfortable with!!! Since the days of Constable ("canvasses covered in green slime" according to a critic of the day), modern art, and nearly all art was modern once, has been almost universally unpopular. It doesn't necessarily take time to get understood, but in time the best of it gets accepted and liked. Twas ever thus |

So if I really wanted to 'get it', what would my thinking process be looking at the painting? Or is it something that cant be taught? You either see the art or you dont?

Saying it's not exactly great art isn't the same as saying there isn't a place for it on someone's wall if they like that sort of thing. Scully's stuff I could imagine really brightening up a cloakroom
or as a seat cushion design for a 1978 Vauxhall Chevette. It's still far better than a lot of modern "art", like the rubbish at the start of this fred.Some pretentious **** could keep rubbing peppers into their eyes and throw a pile of used tear soaked betting slips on a table and stick it in a gallery called "despair of failure" and some mug would buy it if the "artist"' name fit. That's where we are at. |

Before anyone accuses me of plagiarism I have been working on the 'tear soaked betting slips' as part of my 2019 consignment for display at the Tate Modern (Autumn 2019) . Everybody who appreciates real art is more than welcome

I do believe that if someone can sell a piece of anything for a particular amount, his being able to sell it for that amount alone deserves appreciation. If its a painting like that, he probably deserves a medal too. |
