TWO of France's richest men have pledged to donate millions to help repair Notre Dame after the Paris landmark was partially destroyed by a horrific fire on Monday afternoon.
Businessman and art collector Bernard Arnault announced last night his family will donate £172.7m (€200m) towards the rebuilding of Notre Dame. The outstanding gesture was followed by another very generous donation by the hands of billionaire François-Henri Pinault, who said in a statement he will give France £86.3m (€100m) to help to reconstruct the cathedral.
The donations come after French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to rebuild the medieval cathedral after a horrific fire engulfed it for more than nine hours.
That such generous donations were pledged so quickly should come as no real surprise, the ancient cathedral holds a special place in the hearts of so many French citizens and stands as a symbol of gothic architectural magnificence for the whole world to admire.
However, it came as a complete surprise when, this morning, Jacob Rees-Mogg pledged to match these combined donations with an equivalent sum from the coffers of the right-wing European Research Group.
In a brief statement, Rees-Mogg explained that, “faced with such devastating damage to a culturally significant building, it is the duty of the ERG to show solidarity with our French brethren to ensure that it if fully restored as a symbol of European excellence, Vive la République”.
It is understood that Emmanuel Macron has personally called Rees-Mogg to thank him for his unconditional generosity ahead of the Easter celebration.

The ERG are going to donate north of £250m to this??! I know they're minted but that seems a whopping sum by anyones standards. As for the sentiment behind it - standing strong with France and Paris - it's the entirely human and laudible response |
