2001 as used a lot of equipment, crew, location etc used after filming Saving Private Ryan (both Spielberg/Hanks involved), except it's far better.
How could you not have seen it all by now? For shame! Captain Sobel should put you on a charge. It's on e.g. Prime Video. |

It was indeed a wonderful production.
The Pacific was ok I suppose but BOB was a hundred times better, imo. |

Available on box sets (Sky).
Very powerful series... Baph, a number of the yanks in it are in fact British actors. |

The Russian tv series Shtrafbat (The Penal Battalion) was magnificent too, despite the English subtitles being inadequate.
Well worth a watch if you haven`t seen it. |

Tricky to find, but this one works for me on Chrome

Injera; it all cams as a surprise to me at the time; even Dexter Fletcher is English! I just had a look at the cast & Michael Fassbender wsas in 7 episodes as well
|
|
By:
There's lots of cameos (pre-famous)
Tom Hardy, Fassbender, Simon Pegg, Dominic Cooper even Talk Show host Jimmy Fallon appears briefly on a jeep |
|
By:
.... James McAvoy too
|
|
By:
It's incredible Baph! Fletcher is VERY convincing as is Doc Roe! (Shane Taylor from Dover!!!)
It's virtually a British cast. HBO know their onions! |
|
By:
Fletcher has some accent alright; fooled me for years

Tom Hanks apparently has a hard to spot cameo in a pre mission meeting.
His son is the young officer who turns up in the episode near the end where they are camped across a german river. I agree it's far better than "the pacific" which I found a big disappointment . |

One of the best TV series ever made I think. Certainly up there although I liked Deadwood, The Wire, GoT, it might be as good if not better than any or all I have mentioned. Didn't watch it from the start. That is the only reason.
|
|
By:
OK sorry about GoT but I do love it!
|

I bought the whole series on Amazon (streaming) for £12.99 back in 2017 - There to watch whenever I want without having to clutter the house. Definitely up there with the best ever.

The accompanying book to the series was a great read.

The "show the real soldiers" before every episode was a stroke of genius, it really tied the thing together and made it more real.
Unfortunately many (I'd guess most) are dead now. |
|

Last episode tonight and have to say overall it has been a disappointment. Nowhere near the quality I remembered. Overall I would describe the series as weak.

HOW VERY DARE YOU!

I rewatch BOB every 1-2 years. Have to disagree Steve I think it holds up very well still.

I watched a few episodes recently, it's still fantastic. There are a couple that aren't so good but on the whole it's still great.
Interesting couple bits of trivia, was apparently the first "big" roles for Michael fassbender AND James McAvoy. In fact I didn't even realise that was him in it but I remember the character. (He's a very young looking replacement). |

I'm hoping for the Winter's memoir for father's day - fingers crossed
|
|
By:
I thought the same when it came out though JC - I don't think it is that the episodes are poor now, just that they weren't all of the same quality to begin with - same with any tv show.

Yesterday Channel : Ww2 - Battles for Europe is on (NEW), just had a bit from Edward Shames, Band of Brothers fans should recognise that distinctive name ("Shames") as he's portrayed in it. (One of the few now left alive).
