I'm definitely not a politics expert (or even close to it) but do you think they're playing this well or badly strategically?

They could have been out of the EU by now and since then softer options are coming into play ,more and more (Customs Union, Norway, Delays, Revoke, Peoples Vote, etc.)

Still "No deal" is on the table though - so they have been somewhat successful, like the spectre at a really **** feast. Seems like they are greater than the sum of their parts politically but only really because the snap election backfired.

What you all reckon?

they have failed. I don't blame JRM for trying to out the nutcase removed 3 months ago; at least they made an effort, but were ultimately badly advised. Molly Robbins probably had his hand in that as well. The longer they go on crying in their real ale; & doing absolutely nothing, the more they will have failed, until they are completely forgotten. I for one am extremely underwhelmed & disappointed with them

Whatever you think of the ERG - you have to admire what they have achieved.

That you can be worth $100m+ (Walter the Softy) mostly through inheritance & marriage, advocate massive tax avoidance, be educated at Eton/Oxford before working as a spiv in the city. I cannot think of a more privileged representation of "the establishment" - so to then convince many ordinary working class people that you are a man of the people and the anti-establishment solution to their anger with the establishment - that takes some proper cunning.

However odious you find them, you have to admire their ability to manipulate the facts and to manipulate (very disillusioned and discontented) people. Persuading 50.3% of turkeys to vote for Christmas is some achievement - then again it's a lot easier to manipulate that many middle class and working class people if you have first spent the best part of 30 years inflicting your ideologies upon them to fuel their anger and discontent.

IMO crashing out and not knowing what will happen over the next few years
is better than staying in and not knowing what will happen over the next few years

As the EU have not shown any plan of action for the next 5 years (or if they have it not been easily visable)
and we could stay in and have a vote but we most probably lose these
when everybody else gangs up.
Report Foinavon • April 6, 2019 3:26 PM BST
George Galloway also supports a clean Brexit. Funny that, I'm trying to work out what he has in common with the ERG. A respect for democracy perhaps?
Report The Management • April 6, 2019 4:01 PM BST
Ah Gorgeous George - one of the most eloquent and impressive orators in his prime - total fruit loop in recent years but still a very impressive orator. The Leave campaign clearly made the better argument. They had all the best orators, were better coordinated, organised, funded etc and the oxymoronic slogan "Take Back Control" was undoubtedly decisive coupled with their relentless fixation on immigration.

As I said, I admire their "achievements" against the backdrop of logic - but history shows it's actually quite easy to whip a crowd into a frenzy if the crowd is already feeling angry, robbed, cheated, ignored and marginalised. It's the standard formula to use a smokescreen or scapegoat to divert attention away from the fact that you are responsible for having angered, robbed, cheated, ignored and marginalised them in the first place.

Either way - if you honestly think the spivs in the ERG have any respect for democracy or would even give the steam off their p!ss to anyone outside their little club - I am embarrassed for you.
Report Baphornet • April 6, 2019 4:06 PM BST

Report The Management • April 6, 2019 5:26 PM BST
Maybe bap - but it Foinavon can't articulate a pro ERG logic then he may as well not comment.

He needn't worry though because the usual bus load of Millwall fans will be along shortly now that the mighty lions have finished the crucial match that might see them scrape retaining their rightful place in the old second division.

It's just would have been interesting to hear from somebody sane - either a middle class tory fanboy or even a Labour voting working class lad - what they think they have in common with the privileged, tax avoiding, multi millionaire, Eton/Oxford educated, Nanny employing, anti establishment men of the people at the ERG.

I'm sure you're both sane - I was referring to the usual nutters that seem to be at the Millwall game.

Walter the Softy represents a constituency that voted almost 60% remain. He doesn't give a monkeys about democracy or do you think he was conflicted and wrestled with his conscience while he was last flying over to the Cayman Islands to sign some papers?

He stands for the will of the people currently - but only if and when the will of the people suits his ideology. Make Britain Great Again - but keep all my assets off-shore? It doesn't stand up to scrutiny as a slogan does it.
Report Foinavon • April 6, 2019 6:13 PM BST
Not many MPs are following the referendum votes of their constituents. If they did there would be a clear majority for leave in Parliament. It was however, a National referendum, not a constituency vote.

as i previously said to northenlite; self-serving capitalists are on both sides of the divide. Agree that the ERG traded under a name that to my mind at least, doesn't exist anymore. So if it was disbanded, you would not see me crying; but as i said they served a purpose. Just a pity they lacked the willpower to see it through. JRMs most recent comments threatening the EU made me cringe tbh
Report The Management • April 6, 2019 6:32 PM BST
I do understand it was a national referendum! - I was just pointing out that I don't think (unlike some others) that he would have needed to wrestle with his conscience on it - or on any other matter!

I guess it completely baffles me that such an obviously odious little man (in every way) can gain an almost cult like or celebrity like following from people that he would quite obviously (in private) completely despise. I find it ironic that anyone working for a living, paying bills, paying tax, etc could possibly listen to a word that he says.

I see all the downsides of the EU but I'm not too far away from believing that the "European oligarchy answerable to no one except a group of unelected bankers" (to quote Foinavon) would probably do better by me, my family and my country than JRM and his cronies.
