said cundy on talksport, I imagine there's a few Alan's knocking about here. Got me thinking, what is the most boring forename you can think of?

my vote goes to John, what a boring name, no wonder people dress it up as Johnny,  come to think of it most boring names are 4 letters, Paul, Mark, Dave, Gary, Eric etc.

Most (not all) Biblical names are safe choices to name your child. Ditto for kings and queens of England. Parents who call their children Fifi Trixibelle or Buddy Bear etc are guilty of cruelty IMO.

Shearer proves the point about Alans being boring.

Are all Alans also pompous and arrogant and masters of the bleeding obvious?

The little Rees-Moggies:

Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher,
Alfred Wulfric Leyson Pius,
Thomas Wentworth Somerset Dunstan,
Peter Theodore Alphege,
Anselm Charles Fitzwilliam,

Will they all grow up to be anti-establishment and men of the people - like their daddy?
Report Jack Hacksaw • April 2, 2019 11:35 AM BST
If they were called Shane or Jordan they would probably get bullied at school.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • April 2, 2019 3:20 PM BST
Peter Rees Mogg's a cheerful little chap. You see him running around in his suit and specs, playing with his normally dressed mates, when his dad takes him to the County Ground at Taunton to watch the cricket during school holidays.
Report scandanavian_haven • April 2, 2019 3:39 PM BST
Alfred, Thomas, Peter and Mary are not particularly overly posh names, but what was he thinking with Sixtus and Anselm? I've never heard of those names before, anyone else? some of middle names as well, Wulfric, Boniface, Alphege, Leyson Pias? I'm probably just too working class to understand, in his circle they could be very normal.

Apparently Septimus is not on the agenda - Nanny has probably hidden the breast pump.
Report The Management • April 2, 2019 4:26 PM BST
With an upper class background set against a predominantly working-class electorate, Rees-Mogg was criticised by many constituents for being too posh, a claim he refused to acknowledge as an issue. News stories from the time ridiculed Rees-Mogg for canvassing the area with his family's nanny and touring the constituency in a Bentley, a claim that he later described as "scurrilous", stating it had been a Mercedes.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • April 2, 2019 4:56 PM BST
And yet he's increased both his vote and his majority at every election. This despite his constituency having voted 57.9% Remain.

He's that rarity: an MP who's genuinely liked by his constituents for being fair, open-minded and conscientious. They wouldn't keep voting for him in ever increasing numbers if he weren't.

rees mogg comes over as a decent bloke, he is always polite
and courteous. and bothers to explain his thoughts even to
those that disagree with him.

its not unusual to have a decent mp, there are quite a few who do
great work for their constituents, some of course are just on a ladder
elsewhere.

Stuck to the old adage - If at first you don't succeed - try something much, much easier.

Having failed in Central Fife and then The Wrekin, I suppose I should give him credit for cracking the renowned Labour stronghold of North East Somerset. Now that it's an International airport, I suppose he can fly direct from Bristol to the Cayman Islands.

NE Somerset is a former mining community. It was previously known as Wansdyke and returned a Labour MP, Dan Norris.

In 2010 it was re-named NE Somerset, which is when Rees Mogg rocked up and turned a 6,000 Labour majority into a 5,000 Conservative majority.

So, The Management is correct in giving Rees Mogg credit for cracking a renowned Labour stronghold.
Report donny osmond • April 2, 2019 5:46 PM BST
it used to be the safe tory seat of wansdyke, which fell in the bliar landslide,
returned to tories by jrm, having been classed as a marginal.

but ne somerset is a bit different by boundary

I guess flying to the Cayman Islands twice a year doesn't interfere with his ability to represent his constituents.

Was there not a change of boundaries rather than just a re-naming?

His constituents have had plenty of chances to examine his travel arrangements, and more and more of them clearly like what they see, or he wouldn't keep getting more votes. If they don't like it, they have every opportunity of telling him to his face when he's at the cricket. He talks to anybody.

Labour got 7,000 votes in Bath in 2017. Their vote has increased there at both the last two elections, as Labour has re-positioned itself as the party of the middle classes.
Report Injera • April 2, 2019 6:06 PM BST
TM - how individual constituencies/regions/countries voted is irrelevant. It was a UK, non party political vote.

The people of NE Somerset seem to grasp that. It's not hard..

The current Bath MP is a LibDem - a German lady named Wera Hobhouse (born Wera von Reden). She'd previously been a Conservative councillor. She actually ran against Rees Mogg in NE Somerset (her home constituency) in 2015, but got beaten out of sight.

Her husband is one of the Hobhouse family, whose estate seems to consist of most of Somerset north-east of Wincanton. Twenty years ago one of them, living at Hadspen, owned a boxer dog, which they refused point-blank to keep under control. It all but killed my two teenage dogs on one occasion, and they could hardly bring themselves to acknowledge the fact, never mind apologize.

That was the last time I ever voted Lib Dem, so I'd like to think I've had a role to play in the party's subsequent demise.

Sorry to hear about your dogs.

I think taking the hit for the Tories trebling tuition fees was the end of the Lib Dems in my neck of the woods.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • April 2, 2019 6:40 PM BST
I think it was simply the way they facilitated a Conservative government in the first place which saw the Lib Dems crash so spectacularly in my constituency (Taunton Deane). The Tory vote only increased by 3,000 in 2015, but the Lib Dems fell by a staggering 16,000: to Labour, UKIP, Greens and various independents. Basically to everyone except the Conservatives.
Report The Management • April 2, 2019 6:48 PM BST
I just found it odd - the Lib Dems just seemed to take the hit for everything. To be fair nobody was more surprised than David Cameron - hence the current farce. Kind of funny really -
Lib Dems promise not to raise tuition fees - thinking no chance they would ever be in a position to have to keep the promise.
Cameron - promises EU referendum thinking no way he would ever have to deliver on his promise.
