Just Checking after one of his regular huge gambling wins. The worst for that sort of thing used to be those racecourse bookmakers whose system was to lay all the outsiders, leaving the favourites running for them. The idea was that the rags were always underpriced in those days (as Betfair proved, when it came along, with 33/1 shots being priced up at 100.0), so those bookmakers used to be insufferably smug on afternoons when jolly after jolly went in. Mind you, it just made their reaction all the funnier when they did lay a live one, and they turned out to be the only firm in the ring not to have a skinner. (Frank Morton/Rocquaine/£5,000 to £100/ Stratford June 1995 was a good one - the wheel of smugness turned full circle to the punter in question that evening, I can confirm). |
