Four years later Sir Robert Peel's Conservatives regained control with less than 52% support , but again no 2nd election was called despite the margin of victory being less than 5% . Democracy worked perfectly well then and yet now almost 200 years later , it would appear that the goalposts are being dug up as we speak with a view to repositioning them in a place yet to be determined .
So what's happened ? Maybe our ancestors were simply more gracious in defeat .
