They seem to be making a big comeback. I am sitting on a small fortune. Loads all in very good condition.

Can`t beat listening to your favourite music on vinyl with a large glass of expensive Malt and a Cuban cigar. Grin

Rock and pop music , all music really , lost something when digital recordings and cds came in
Vinyl was richer , more beautiful

Even the oldest recording from the early part of the 20c even  scratchy and crackly will sound better than a modern digital recording
Report mouse muldoon March 21, 2019 12:26 AM GMT

I think the oldest original recordings in my collection are on a Leadbelly compilation, albeit on a CD, not sure they were all released on vinyl.

Possibly they were in some form, but you'd have to be a proper serious collector to find them.

I don't own any vinyl pre 60s, I'm not sure what the oldest one I've got is.

I have vinyl records from 50s , 60s , 70s , 80s and probably before that can’t remember they’re in boxes in the roof space of my mums house
They’ve been there and I haven’t seen them for years , hundreds of them

Report mouse muldoon March 21, 2019 1:01 AM GMT
And therein lies the disadvantage of vinyl; if you have a very large collection you either need a massive house or you bung them all up in the loft somewhere. Same with books. From that POV you can see the advantage of having everything on digital files, but you still get the feeling that the younger generation are missing out in many ways.

I suppose the irony is in 1000 years time vinyl records will still work well, perhaps virtually as good as new, CDrs, CDs I believe, hard drives, magnetic tapes etc will all have failed. Maybe I should get buried with some of my favourite albums, so when some future Alice Roberts digs me up, then can still get an idea of what fantastic taste I have.

The myth of vinyl being worth fortunes continues at paceWink  There is some truth in this of course but very little in % terms is worth very much at all, and many of the prices quoted are based on asking prices as opposed to prices realised. The things that are worth money are very specific - demo's, obscures, mint first pressings by initially unsaleable artistes etc etc.

I had quite a few 60s LPs. Searched them online and not worth the effort of trying to sell.
Gave them to a jumble sale.

Or keep them.

I have over 500 vinyl records that are worthless but playing them and listening to them is something special.

Why something that you enjoy has to have value outside your enjoyment is rather strange.

My mother gave all my vinyl away to some jumble sale. Several hundred LP's & even greater
number of singles. Some really rare stuff, limited editions, coloured vinyl, bootlegs. A hell
of a collection of all genres of music.
I boxed it and left most of it it in their unused garage as i didn't have the room for it all
in my flat.
She told me she thought it was all CD's now & I wouldn't want the vinyl anymore.
I nearly blew my top but bit my tongue and just wept quietlyPlain

That was bad luck N. Coloured vinyl were normally limited special editions. It`s the rare limited editions that are worth quite a lot.

David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records.

Some charity shops can have piles of them, I'm not sure how much effort they put into pricing them.
If they do .... maybe the valuable ones go "walkies" anyway!
Report themightymac March 24, 2019 9:02 PM GMT
You are right. I doubt that anybody will find any of value in charity shops. They usually have experts going through all items before putting them on the shelves.
Report themightymac March 24, 2019 9:05 PM GMT
.... but one still finds some decent records at value prices if one is just buying for one`s own enjoyment.

A friend of mine sold their complete collection, over 500 lps, to a high street record shop for £100. They went nuts when they revisited the shop to discover that they were selling them for £10+ each.
Report Just Checking March 24, 2019 9:10 PM GMT
I find charity shops a bit depressing as you know when some collections of a certain "age" come in, like records, its likely they are from house clearances when someone has shuffled off to the choir invisible.

I was looking at charity shop records and noticed a couple had someone's name written on, I'd guess from the days when people would take their favourite records to the "disco" and wanted it back at the end of the night Laugh You don't get to take your Simple Minds 12" through the pearly gates, even if St Peter has a cracking Disco van.

This is something I posted on Tommy Toes Pub a couple of months ago that is a bit relevant here.

Last week I bought a record player. I've been looking on gumtree for about 12 months. That means I look every two or three weeks. My budget is less than $200. You'd be amazed at the absolute crap people put up for sale and want less than $200 for. 1970s and 80s stereos that can look kind of retro cool but always comes with some kind of caveat at the end of the ad. Like "doesn't work. $150."

I remember those things from my own time in the 1970s and 80s and no I don't want to pay $150 for some old junk and try to figure out how to get it working and spending more money in the process. Anyway I came across an ad for a record player for $55 this bloke said he bought it to transfer his vinyl onto USB. I called him up and he sounded cool so I went to have a look.

He was at the Gypsy Leather store on Parramatta Rd Auburn. I had a look through the window and it was obvious his clientele was exclusively Outlaw Bikers. I went inside and he was talking to a customer so I had a look around. There was at least 500 Harley Davidson T-Shirts on display. When the customer left I went to the counter and said,"maybe you can help me? I'm really struggling to find a Harley Davidson T-Shirt in this city."  He smiled and said 'you're here about the record player?'

I don't know how this guy got into the business of selling accoutrements to outlaw bikers because he was a little nerdy chap about 5 years older than me. Very nice bloke and I would've liked to continue our chat but a customer came in. The record player was as described- nearly new he just never got around to using it. $55 is a great deal.

I'm absolutely loving it. I've dug out a milk crate of albums and been giving them a twirl. It really takes you back. When having an album and listening to music was a physical thing. Holding the cover in your hands and reading the stuff on it and looking at the pictures. Some of my vinyl discs are dead straight and the needle goes over them smoothly but sometimes it's like there's a heavy swell and the needle or stylus or whatever it's called goes up and down like a hand pump.

I love watching the whole process. I wonder why it was replaced by CD's. They told us CDs wouldn't scratch like records. That was a LIE. What about when you had the CD player on in the car and hit a bump and the track jumped? I must admit I have no idea how a record works. I peer at the spinning vinyl and the needle and look at the speaker and listen to the CHOONS but I have about as much understanding of  how it all works as a pre 1788 Aborigine.
