People have been buried alive. Nowadays even with all the diagnostics and understanding of modern technology people are found alive in morgues or even when getting buried, never mind back then. I remember reading of them digging up coffins for whatever reasons and sometimes finding evidence inside like scratches and fingernails in the wood. Terrible way to go.

Steak through the heart should see them off.

I was worried that my Nan's best friend, Maggie Harris, might be a prostitute and therefore a potential Yorkshire Ripper victim. Fortunately,  she wasn't. Would let you finger her for nowt.

If you are unfortunate enough to be buried alive it will take about 5 and a half hours before all the oxygen in the coffin was consumed, the fatter you are the quicker you will die.
