Paddy Power Betfair chief executive Peter Jackson said he was pleased with the way the company had performed in 2018, as he also announced plans for a name change as they unveiled their latest set of annual results.
The group is set to be renamed Flutter Entertainment plc, subject to shareholder approval.
Jackson said: "With a growing portfolio of brands, we plan to rename the group as Flutter Entertainment plc. There are no plans to use this historical name for consumers, and we will seek shareholders permission for the change at our forthcoming AGM."
Group revenue rose by seven per cent to £1.9 billion in 2018, but underlying ebitda (earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation) was down five per cent at £451 million once £24m worth of investment in the US sports betting market was taken into account.
Jackson said: "I'm really pleased with the way that the group performed in 2018 in what was a challenging year for the sector with regulatory and tax changes. Our collection of challenger brands are well positioned in their local markets.
"Paddy Power has regained its mojo, taking share following product improvements and some of our 'classic' marketing. Betfair, our unique combination of product that appeals to customers around the world, will be improved by our ongoing investments in languages and localisation.
"In Australia recent tax changes favour the largest operators and we are determined to maintain our leadership position amongst the online bookies, using Sportsbet’s leading customer proposition and generosity to continue to take market share."
Jackson said the opening of the US online sports betting market had the potential to be the most significant development to occur within the sector since the advent of online betting.
He went on: "Rather than announcing our plans, we have moved quickly to give ourselves the best chance to win in that market. We are confident that FanDuel’s nationally recognised sports brand, eight million customers, our group betting expertise, and our market access partnerships position us very well.
"Our success to date supports this view, with FanDuel achieving a 35 per cent online market share in New Jersey in its first five months of operation, and Meadowlands becoming a marquee venue for sports betting."
Jackson said the new financial year had started in line with expectations, while already in 2019 the group has acquired Georgian operator Adjarabet.

"Flutter" was of course the original betting exchange that was taken over by Betfair nearly 20 years ago.

It was fun - but great concept as it was at the time, it had too many oddities that they never ironed out for it to be a success- you had to bet/lay the whole bet offered (from memory), you couldn't take part of it - which must have hugely held back
turnover/liquidity. Sticking with fractional rather than decimal odds was also a huge mistake. I seem to remember you could see who you had been matched with and (if so inclined) taunt them accordingly. |

Yeah - great concept that the Wherechester Rovers fan could have some banter with the Anywhere City fan
- but didn't take into account that the internet (then still on dial-up at 1pence per minute with Freeserve - down a copper phone line) was about to explode and provide a safe place to go for every anonymous nutter, psychopath and lunatic in the universe! |

Can vaguely remember the weird format and how some things were bundled together - You could offer "United to win by one of the following scorelines....." then offer scorelines that missed out a handful of the likely outcomes.
Very early days you could lay this at Evens on Flutter, Bet United back at Evens with Korals and win both bets if they won by the right/wrong scoreline (or at least just break even whatever the outcome). I know... I'm a filthy arber..... I'll get my coat! |

The Twin Towers in that screenshot would refer to the Wembley Twin Towers, the last England match played at the Old Wembley was on October 7th 2000, they were soon to be demolished.

You could see what other players were doing, so you could click on for example "Duncan Disorderly" and see that he had layed Liverpool for a string of £2 bets which meant that others could copy your strategies.
I also had a Betfair account and felt that Flutter had a more user friendly interface. |

Then Betfair came along and allowed you to do the very same thing - but without even having to bet - ......Chit Chat! |
