At the time I don't think most people realised they were a marketing exercise formed to cash in on the Beatles explosion. RIP

Sad news.

We all know The Monkees were a 'manufactured' band but they made some terrific 45s

"A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"  (written by Neil Diamond)

Yes the Monkees were manufactured, but they were manufactured to cash in on the brilliant song writing talent around in the States at the time. Leiber and Stoller, Carol King, Neil Diamond and Gerry Goffin worked with the producers and the actors (who got song writing credits on some of the songs)to sell records.
But what wonderful songs they were. Often laced with social commentary, as in Pleasant Valley Sunday, the songs also presented the exuberant optimism which epitomised the zeitgeist of the mid 1960s.
Peter Tork was central to that vision, with his cheeky, toothy smile and basin cut barnet, he made it cool to be geeky, thus giving hope to a generation of young lads who didn't feel like they fitted in.
Pop music at its very best.

RIP Peter Tork

Three great covers to look up

1) Pleasant Valley Sunday as done by The Wedding Present in 1992
2) I'm A Believer - Smash Mouth (from Shrek)

Best of all...

3) Last Train To Clarksville - The Damnation Of Adam Blessing from 1969
A wonderful spaced out and slowed down version - sounds like the it could come from the second album by The Stone Roses!
