True, you don't need to sit on a river bank trying to catch animals to enjoy the countryside. I'd rather walk along the river bank and get exercise as well.

Yes Richie...could be classed as cruel,as eating meat and drinking beer (did you know most beer contains a fishes stomach)

Dog ownership is equally barbaric. Especially working dogs.

Horse racing and greyhound racing must be barbaric as well then. CrazyCrazy

Maybe I could get behind it if the licence stipulated that you could only catch them in a net and sling them back in, gently, before they suffocate.

I presume it was farmed salmon ? If so it was Cruel to the environment and cruel to the wild fish ,better healthier alternatives   https://m.facebook.com/InsideScottishSalmonFeedlots/

Richie - you life must be really challenging! - balancing the relative de-merits of fishing and dog ownership.

conditor, this must be pick on fishermen day, because there aren't enough evil barstewards doing terrible things in this country to get stuck into.

Only a dyed-in-the-wool sociopath would pick up a fish by a hook in it's mouth and suffocate it - for fun.

Mid Sussex here - not expected to get much below 7c tonight, no wind and expected to continue till tomorrow. Big flights settling/feeding across both my big meadows so should be good. Local restaurant expecting 30 brace of breasts which should be fine.

I do love a day out deep sea fishing but we take home and eat most of what we catch, the rest such as dogfish for example gets put back.

Slippy - Are you off the south coast and referring to spurdog?  Dont put it back - makes brilliant fish curry AND no bones as you will know. My granddaughters love it.

For the rest of you this is what they sell in fish and chip shops as Huss (used to be Rock Salmon) and its seriously good.

Mandatory catch and release in Scotland until July (spring stock conservation )can’t even keep a bleeder that goes belly up. Anyway to the op well done getting on the riverbank ,was out and about today collecting horseshit and firewood  ,been bringing some oak and beech saplings along and got them loosened up ready for lifting ,but I fear this false weather we are having will prove troublesome for a lot of things when winter returns, hopefully not another prolonged and  late one this year but the fruit bushes and trees not had enough cold up here yet.  Good luck at the cushies Blackbarn .
