I remember watching that show in the early 80s and there being an electric car (was a Honda iirc).  So why has it taken 35 years to properly hit the market??

Also remember them saying how we'd all have much more leisure time due to technology Laugh  Turns out we are retiring at 70 instead Cry

I won't be buying an electric car until I have to.

I heard a taxi driver on about them, he says he gets about forty five miles before he needs to charge up.
Then there aren't enough charging points so he has to run on petrol for the rest of the day.

Then there's the trouble in keeping them charged. Too much hassle for me.

You need a charging point at ohm
Report donny osmond February 15, 2019 3:23 PM GMT
buy a petrol car in last year they are on sale, it'll easily last 10 years

might be all we need ...

charge up electric car....hope its not taking power from a coal fired generator.

we've had more charing points up here in north east and folk with electric cars
seem to cope quite well. a friend got one of the first electric rangerovers to trial
for 6 months and they put in a charge point for him at his work. he really
didnt want to give it back.

the lack of noise is odd though.

Having a charging point at home goes without saying.

It's inconvenient if you go out on a run, then have to queue up to charge your car before you can get back.

I think I'll rule that out of my life.

Hydrogen cars (if they can make them safe) would imho make more sense. They burn to create just water, and you can create H2 from water + electrical power.
They can be filled up anywhere that can have H2 tanks.

All we need is a load of water + load of nice safe nuclear power stations, pollution problem solved.

As for the waste .. just fire it at the moon. According to conspirach nuts it's actually an alien spaceship, pelting depleted uranium at them might make them show their face over the fence for a neighbourly complaint.

From what little I know, with hydrogen cars you have an efficiency issue. Plus hydrogen isn't an energy source. It stores energy created from other sources(so you are only sending the pollution issue back to the grid). Its probably true that you can burn it to create water and electricity but by the time you do that, you have already lost half of the energy you supplied to that hydrogen in the first place.

Water and Elec aren't a great or useful output if you keep that efficiency in mind. Every now and then there's someone driving a car running on water(but all they are doing is using electricity to start electrolysis in the water, separate hydrogen, then burn that hydrogen. RIP efficiency)
Report Just Checking February 15, 2019 7:58 PM GMT
Hydrogen is an energy source as much as anything is an energy source. Nothing is 100% efficient. Petrol/diesel cars sure as hell aren't.
An electric car has a battery. IT's just a glorified reversible chemical reaction, it has ineffeciency when charging, a constant weight regardless of how much is left, recycling and lifetime issues and nasty metals going into it, and inefficiency when discharging.
Report Just Checking February 15, 2019 7:59 PM GMT
- and creating the electricity to charge the battery also has inefficiencies.
The point is you could refill a hydrogen car in a minute or two I'd presume, recharging a car takes mucho time.
Report detraveller February 15, 2019 8:04 PM GMT
I think not. The hydrogen needs to be compressed before it can be used as fuel(and this process also loses efficiency). So you need to use electricity to produce hydrogen and then compress it. I guess the only practical thing here would be carrying a battery with everything already done inside it. That will have the at best the same or worse issues as recharging EVs. Loses over half the energy by the time you can use that energy is just not practical.

My knowledge here may be a bit off though. I read a piece from Stanford University, it was a response to someone claiming they are running their car on water. They explained why its one, not running on water and two, the process isn't efficient.

if somebody put their mind to it, or needed to.

solar energy could easily be used to generate hydrogen( and oxygen)

rumour was always that the tech existed, but that oil companies wished to sell
their oil first..

got to be cheaper than electric cars, ? but ...electric cars seem the prefered route forward.

Solar Energy and Wind Power are very ecological ways of producing energy

The problem is we need lots of solar panels and wind farms...which cost money to construct and maintain.

But since the sun and wind is free it is not a bad idea

Just waiting for a decent pedlec car/trike to come on the market one with all round weather protection and capable of over 50mph and be under £3000 I dont mind  paying tax and insurance.
We are a 2 car family but would go down to one and a pedlec.
Cliff Ashby and his team invented an hydrogen engine back in the late 60s, it was taken off them or so I was told

While desperately trying to get rid of coal fired power in Australia (despite us having an endless abundance of the naughty black stuff) the Lefties are desperate for us to use electric cars. Actually they'd rather we walk everywhere or at a pinch use a bicycle. They never worry about how much electricity will be needed when 20 million cars get plugged into the charger every night.

It’s all solveable by technology ,don’t fall into the oil cartel trap of spouting off about its where the electricity comes from ,coal burned with new tech and filters would solve pollution and keep it in one place and under much more control and at a fraction of the pollution oil being burnt in inefficient  internal combustion engines ,oil cracking/refining also consumes great amounts of coal fired electricity (a lot more than most think) but without carbon capture both are very polluting but the damage  to humans by internal combustion engines in towns is massive.Tesla have shown that electric can be anything ,fast and high performance but most just want a cheap A-B ,although  ga complete transport system to take the entire country into the 21st century and beyond is needed ,from bike lanes /roads ,electric bikes and scooters right through to other types of mass cheap pollution free and environment friendly solutions .Lots of potential new tech in the pipeline ,but basic stuff like push bikes and electric scooters still have a big part to play, hopefully when sky travel takes over the road and rail network can be kept for cyclists and electric bikes ect .The old rail lines should be repurchased and turned into cycle and walkways although already funding can be difficult . On a recent walk I was reminded that if allowed some cyclists are every bit as dangerous to walkers and as arrogant as the worst car drivers are to cyclists on the road ,nowt worse than some Lycra lout head down at 25mph expecting you to move quickly out the way on a tight track ,had to lay three miles of cut bramble  ztother day to show emm the error of thar ways ,prob be some collateral but hey ho .
