How do you stop them please?

Never had a problem with them, then went to Fuerteventura about 5 years ago & got bitten about 20 times, all really nasty bites that turned into blisters the size of 20p pieces the colour of port wine scars while my wife was left untouched. Went to Lanzarote recently, not so many bites, 6, again nasty blisters and itches and again they leave my wife alone!

As soon as I get to the hotel I plug one of those electric mosquito repellents into a socket in the room but on the last day I noticed a mossie on the ceiling, so wonder if that works?

I can understand covering yourself in deet everytime you go out & sleeping under a mosquito net, if you were to go to a tropical country where they are rife & there's a chance of malari & other stuff, but the Canaries? I love Lanzarote, been there a lot of times, but this is putting me off going back Sad

Any ideas anyone?

Peppermint oil or lemon eucalyptus is all you need McCoy Carp. Use either or both of them and you will never be bitten.

I think the plug ins work well myself, probably has deet in it but "jungle forumula" works for me on exposed skin.
Long sleeves, trousers at dusk particulary if possible.

Never heard of peppermint oil or lemon eucalytus,i'll look into that,i know a citrous candle deters but only a bit.

3 simple rules

1. Drink copious amounts of gin and tonic

2. Wear socks in the evening

3. Stand next to people who are drinking Bacardi and Coke

the g&t will only work with the old school tonic water though

Off to Costa Rica this year. Am hoping insect repellent (deet etc) and long trousers will stop me getting eaten alive/catching Dengue Fever. Liking the G+T idea.

On 4th G&T now and no mosquito action as yet. I must admit I'd not heard of it's efficacy as a repellant before.

Good shout. Usually drink cold beer in the Canaries. Don't usually get bothered by mozzies, although mrs m did have a couple of bites once.

G+T doesn't repel them at all, it's just the quinine in tonic prevents malaria.
I've used natural repellant (lemony smelling stuff) and it seemed to work, just put it on the exposed bits (wrists, neck etc) at dusk.

If I'm in a mosquito-y place I make sure I seal the bedroom off at night and do a check for them. I hate the ****ers and they LOVE me ..Sad

Last think you want is to be sleeping off your 10 pints of san miguel as a couple of them feast on you all night..

The quinine is bitter. Less chance mossies will bite you for your blood. Far better to go for a Bacardi and Coke drinker simples. If you don't believe it try drinking Bacardi and Coke while your girlfriend / boyfriend drinks gin and tonic!

Over-the-counter Thiamine (B1) tablets is reputed to work very well
