I lease a car for 3 years all good and payments all made on time.

Lease company are now chasing me for £140 for a small scratch....(hardly visible in my opinion)

I’m reluctant and don’t want to pay ...any suggestions?

contact British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association. They have clear definitions as to what constitutes "Fair Wear ". Do you have photo's of the scratch ?

What company was it? Send independent assessor and chip specialist for assessment and repair (if necessary). Then name and shame the leasing company.

for a small scratch

Probably half the size of the one that sank the Titanic.

I lease a van and sometimes get hit with charges at the end of the contract. They do wave small things with me though because I've been leasing for years.

However when I've had damage I've found it best to get the work done yourself before you hand the vehicle back. It's cheaper.

But this issue is the one main drawback of leasing..

I'd imagine your contract with these people is over, or you could threaten them with going else where in future.

After 3 years though is a bit harsh,(cant expect a new car back must have general wear and tear) maybe ask if this number is negotiable?

A crafty way of "stealing" money off one; once paid £10 for a number plate bulb (tiny) replacement otherwise my car would not pass its MOT - car was checked by my usual mechanic prior; MOT was £29.99 (average about £40), and I lived about 10 miles away. Another occasion I was quoted over £300 for a small dent on a wheel arch of a Toyota car by main garage, but was done for only £70 by a local garage.

Beware: Rip-off merchants aplenty on the high street esp the household name ones for tyre, exhaust and clutch replacements.

my car went back 2 months ago.their inspector told me there would be a 45 pound charge which after
2 years didnt seem too bad.

I'm assuming you signed a contract and declined any sort of cover or at least had an excess so you should pay it.

You say "hardly visible" which to me says that it is visible and clearly they deem it outside wear and tear. BVRLA wont rule in your favour if this is the case so you would be wasting your time.

You have 2 options imo, pay and move on or refuse to pay and be entered onto the BVRLA RISC list https://www.bvrla.co.uk/resource/been-refused-a-rental.html which will stop you from leasing or renting a vehicle either in the UK or abroad in most cases. For £140 it is unlikely they will do much more than send a few demand letters but being placed on the RISC database if you ever want to lease or hire a car again is not a good thing as the only way to be removed is to pay the bill plus any additional fees accured. It would also be rather embarassing if in a few years time when you forgot you went on holiday and tried to hire a car only to be turned down at collection point because you are on the "RISC" database.

Update.

I sent an email to the Chief Executive of the car leasing company explaining that the car was returned fully valeted  and in excellent condition and I did not accept the costs  associated with the alleged damage ....such sharp practice in my opinion is unacceptable.

I’ve received a reply saying they have now reviewed the matter have credited the invoice in full  and apologise for inconvenience caused.
