Report Baphornet February 2, 2019 10:39 PM GMT
A group of disaffected Labour MPs is preparing to quit the party and form a breakaway movement on the political centre ground amid growing discontent with Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership on Brexit and other key issues including immigration, foreign policy and antisemitism.

The Observer has been told by multiple sources that at least six MPs have been drawing up plans to resign the whip and leave the party soon.

There have also been discussions involving senior figures about a potentially far larger group splitting off at some point after Brexit, if Corbyn fails to do everything possible to oppose Theresa May’s plans for taking the UK out of the EU.

Last night, three of the MPs widely rumoured to be involved in the plans for an initial breakaway – Angela Smith, Chris Leslie and Luciana Berger – refused to be drawn into talk of a split, and insisted they were focused on opposing Brexit.

The centre ground may look barren but that’s the place to look for life
But they did not deny that moves could be made by the spring or early summer.

Seriously what is with these people do they never want a real choice between the tories and Labour
Report Torquemada February 2, 2019 10:55 PM GMT
I would imagine more than four fifths of the Labour Party are deeply unhappy about Corbyn being their leader, he's toxic. Breaking away to form a new party sounds a good idea in theory - the problem in reality is that there are also half a dozen different factions amongst those who hate Jezza.

If it was a properly centrist party that could be good, but I'd fear it might just be New Labour Mk 2. The Libs imho have totally lost the plot so we need a 3rd party I think.

This article has been written in some form several times over past few years. Wouldn't buy it until it actually happens. Could be for the best, but is a huge gamble, and politicians ultimately don't tend to take huge gambles and are party people who want to keep their job.
Report n88uk February 3, 2019 12:33 AM GMT
The whole political landscape needs shaking up really. Both parties are full of people sharing different believes now brought under the same banner. It would take a real revolutionary to a) make it happen and b) make it a success though.

Report macarony February 3, 2019 10:26 AM GMT
Why do people want more of the same old politics it is not like its been a runaway success?
Little if any difference between the 3 main British political parties, all of them have shown how inept and redundant they have become over the last 30 odd years, yet some people still vote for this type of politics Why?
Report 1st time poster February 3, 2019 10:50 AM GMT
POLITICS IS ABOUT CHOICES ,mrs may has this week admitted there is money to put into labour towns suffering from big industry closing down but its her parties choice not to spent it and make them towns and people suffer, unless they vote for her bad deal then you can have it,yet there,s hardly a ripple amongst the electorate when in other countries thyey,d be marching, rioting in downing street, like paris, venezula etc
