Surprised I can't find a back-dated topic on the BBC 3-Part Serial about the systematic grooming of girls in Rochester. Interesting how it all unfolded and how those victims were ignored and surprisingly done via the BBC!
Irony is that one of those who tried to help the girls is portrayed by Maxine Peake, the same woman who played Myra Hindley in See No Evil: The Moors Murderers.
The film pretty much concluded that the police brushed it under the carpet because of the ethnicity issues. Interesting stuff and available on Amazon (no longer on iPlayer)
Same sort of covering up and looking other way has been done right across Europe. In Sweden for example it wasn't just ONE festival where women were r@ped by "vibrant" people, it happened a number of times and the police weren't even including it in their post event reports, it was only after the Cologne backlash and a rare bout of investigative reporting by journalists probing it that the truth came out. Germany has done similar things. There is at least hope for Germany, from what I've read about their politics and media, Sweden appears to be a lost cause..

The serial showed how many people tried to bring this to the attention of the authorities but it was not followed up due to the difficulties of prosecuting those involved... even with DNA evidence! Amazing that it took years to go to trial and even when it did, what a harrowing experience for the girls having to deal with one solicitor after another (one for each of the accused). Brave girls indeed to relive what had already been ignored in the past.
