Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a light aircraft which disappeared over the Channel Islands, the French Civili Aviation authority has confirmed.

The Argentine striker was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu which went missing off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night.

Cardiff City had signed the 28-year-old for £15m from French club Nantes.
Guernsey Police said "no trace" of the missing aircraft had been found.

It left Nantes at 19:15 and had been flying at 5,000ft when it contacted Jersey air traffic control requesting descent, the force said.
The plane lost contact while at 2,300ft.

Sightings of red flares were reported during a lifeboat and helicopter search, but "nothing of significance was found", a Channel Islands Air Search spokeswoman said.

The Piper Malibu plane is reported to have lost contact near the Casquets lighthouse
Searches were suspended at 02:00 "due to strengthening winds, worsening sea conditions and reducing visibility", police added.

Cardiff Airport confirmed the aircraft was due to arrive from Nantes but a spokeswoman said there were no further details.
Guernsey harbour master Captain David Barker said no distress call had been received.

He said conditions were "much better" after searches resumed.
"It's far easier to see something on the surface in daylight," he said. "We are looking for any traces of an aircraft, a life raft, persons in the water, life jackets."

The Met Office said conditions were not "too intense" at the time the aircraft went missing but had become wetter and windier later in the evening.

There are currently two planes, two helicopters and a lifeboat searching for the aircraft.

No trace has yet been found.

Conditions during the search last night were challenging, with wave heights of up to two metres, with heavy rain showers and poor visibility.

Guernsey harbour master Captain David Barker spoke to BBC News earlier.

He said that no distress call had been received and that if the search continues into the night it is unlikely to have a good outcome.

Guernsey Police said an "intensive" nine-hour search found no trace of the missing aircraft. A decision on whether to resume will be taken on Thursday.

A rescuer said there was "no hope" of finding the 28-year-old Argentine or pilot from Crowle, Lincolnshire, alive.

Channel Islands Air Search chief officer John Fitzgerald said "even the most fit person" would only survive for a few hours in the water.

Guernsey Police said the search, involving "multiple aircraft and one lifeboat", was halted as the daylight had faded.

As part of rescue efforts, police have been looking at satellite images and mobile phone data.

The search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson has been called off after rescuers failed to find their plane.

After three days of scouring the English Channel, authorities made the decision to abandon the search.

Capt Barker said that the depth of the sea where the plane had last contact was about 100m and it would remain a missing persons case for the police.

AWKWARD $27 MILLION QUESTION POSED

As searchers offered little hope on Wednesday of finding Sala alive, some in football posed the first sensitive questions over insurance and the fee Cardiff had just agreed to pay for the Argentine striker.

Sala signed with the Premier League club on Saturday from French Ligue 1 club Nantes for a reported $27 million, and at the same time agreed a three-and-a-half year contract with his new club.

Fans in both Nantes and Cardiff held vigils for the player on Tuesday night but one question that faces both clubs, is who will pay the transfer fee, which represents a substantial amount of money for both clubs.

“The transfer contract is valid as soon as it is registered with FIFA,” Alexandra Cohen Jonathan, a lawyer and partner at the Paris firm August Debouzy, told AFP.

“If this is the case, in principle Cardiff must pay the ($27 million) to Nantes even though the player has disappeared.”
According to a source close to FC Nantes, the deal had been finalised. “The contract was signed Saturday at 5pm and approved Monday,” said the source.

Broadly, big clubs take out two types of insurance to cover players. There is liability cover, against bodily injuries suffered by players which is attributable to the employer.

Then there is key man insurance, originally designed to protect businesses from the sudden loss of important members of the company, which football clubs use to cover themselves in case they lose valuable squad members.

It is based on transfer values.

“Nantes had certainly signed a contract of this type, but does this contract still apply when a transfer has already been signed?” asked Cohen Jonathan. “Have Cardiff already taken out this insurance? Had it already come into effect?”

As for the liability insurance, that would only come into play “if one of the two clubs was the organiser of air transport,” said Cohen Jonathan, adding that this does not seem to be the case.

Cardiff president Mehmet Dalman said on Wednesday that the club had offered to arrange Sala’s trip but the attacker had opted to make “his own arrangements”.

In plane accidents, the carrier is responsible for compensation but the payout is normally capped at $160,000, said Cohen Jonathan.

But that cap disappears “if you prove the air carrier is at fault,” the lawyer added.

“In that case, the right to compensation is complete and full, that is to say that if the damage is ($27 million), we have the right to the entire sum in compensation.”

The interested parties would need to prove the owner of the plane was to blame and, indeed, to establish who that is.
Shortly before take off, Sala sent relatives a desperate message saying the plane looked like it was “going to fall apart”.

That message “will necessarily lead to an examination of the plane’s maintenance log” to try to establish a possible fault and the responsibility of the air carrier or, in case of the failure of a component, an equipment manufacturer in case of failure of a component, said the lawyer.

“In any case, someone will have to pay ($27 million),” said Cohen Jonathan.

Conditioner, if the plane was on the sea it would of been found, if it's under the sea which it is it will never be found. Same applies for a bright orange life raft.

More than £220,000 has been raised to fund a private search for missing Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala.

The official search for the Argentine striker, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson, 59, was called off on Thursday.

But the cash, raised via a GoFundMe page, has allowed the footballer's family to fund two boats, which started looking on Saturday.

The world's best shipwreck hunter is set to begin searching for the missing Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala and his pilot using the latest undersea technology.

Marine scientist David Mearns, 60, is set to arrive in Guernsey today to help local recovery experts with the hunt for the aircraft.

He will most likely begin his search, which will use multi-beam sonar, remote control vehicles and a drop down camera, next week after bad weather passes through the area.

Two large fishing vessels have been searching the area for the plane since Saturday morning.

“A second cushion was found in the same area later that day.

French club Nantes have demanded payment from Cardiff City over the £15m transfer of Emiliano Sala, BBC Wales has learned.

Sala, along with pilot David Ibbotson, was on board the Piper Malibu N264DB which lost radar contact near Guernsey on 21 January.

The Argentine striker, 28, was Premier League club Cardiff's record signing.

Cardiff have withheld the first scheduled payment until they are satisfied with the documentation.

BBC Wales has learned the transfer fee is due to be paid in instalments over three years.

It is understood Nantes are threatening legal action if they do not receive a payment within 10 days. The BBC has attempted to speak to Nantes for comment.

A source at Cardiff says they will honour the contract but not until they have clarified "all the facts".

It is unclear whether or not the club have insurance covering the cost of the transfer.

And Cardiff are "surprised" Nantes have made the demand while attempts are being made to recover a body from the plane that was carrying Sala and Ibbotson.

The body was seen in the Piper Malibu on Monday, two weeks after the plane vanished near Guernsey.

French club Bourdeaux are also entitled to a cut of the fee, thought to be 50% - Sala was on their books from 2012 to 2015 before joining Nantes.

The plane carrying Sala and Ibbotson, from Crowle, Lincolnshire, disappeared en route to Cardiff after the footballer returned to Nantes to say goodbye to his former team-mates.

That means the pilot was the first out the plane?

Still in freezing water with storm driven waves engulfing him, doubt he survived long.

With his football talent, one would think Sala would have had a good life.
