Good morning, Culvin.

I directed a few pool and snooker coaching videos in Rennes back in the early 1990s. Alas, my spoken French is not so hot nowadays (one has to keep it up) but I can still read and write the language fairly well.

Good luck with your studies, sir. When you start to dream in French, you've cracked it. Speaking of which, a sound piece of advice is to invest in an audiobook tutorial and play it every night as you fall asleep... it really works.

Best wishes.

Culvin if you know some French you might enjoy listening and watching France24 online , it’s a news , current affairs station and it makes learning enjoyable and a bit easier , you seem to pick the language up almost without realising it especially if you are listening to a news report etc that you know about and therefore know what they are describing

My cable TV broadcasts TV5 Monde. Watching the 8pm news (7pm UK time) is very good. I found that watching televised news was extremely helpful when I first went to live in France as the diction is measured and clear and comprehension is assisted by the visual images showing context.

You have to persevere though, watch an hour every evening and you will soon improve.

I agree with Foinavon and would add that there is a French Radio app that streams many channels of which France Culture is probably the clearest in terms of diction . www.franceculture.fr has plenty of items that one can study .

Dunlaying, have you read any of Michel Houellebecq,s novels? I hear he has a new one out. I haven't tried him yet and understand he is not shy of courting controversy.

No Foinavon but Serotonine is the ramdam this last week . I might try it . They pronounce his name very nearly as Welbeck . I wondered who they were reviewing .Laugh

I aced French at school, and have visited a few times and have a few froggy friends.
Its been a while since I used any French but I still remember some important phrases, such as

Tu as le cul bordé de nouilles

and if you understand that, you deserve a croissant Laugh

I dream in French sometimes, when I dream of AlizeeLoveLoveLove

Thanks, dunlaying. I was hoping you might know if it's easy reading or not. It can't be as hard going as Proust.
Welbeck isn't all that far off for an English speaker.

I don't think it will be difficult Foinavon as the subject matters sound very interesting indeed . I will try a few and see .

I've just checked on Amazon and see there is a Kindle edition for £12. The sample is very short, just over a paragraph but easy reading. I'll start with one of the older novels though as a warm up.
