perhaps out universe is not expanding and its the gravity of our neighbouring universes tugging or pulling at the sides of ours, just like bubbles in a bath where the big bubbles tug at the bubbles close by.so when hubble seen the galaxies racing away from his position it was the stretching of the borders of all sides of our universe.
in other words our universe just stretches like an elastic band out and back in and back out again.

I am only interested in what it will do in my lifetime and that is stay the same. I'm afraid I live in the present and have little interest in the distant past or future.

and another thing that annoys me,some guy said he witnesses a big black hole hoovering up another big black hole a few million  google plex light years away from us last december when he was observing the night sky,i was always told that things we see trillions of miles away happened in the past ,and what he seen happened 20,000 years ago.Laughimvho.

Astronomers have revealed details of mysterious signals emanating from a distant galaxy, picked up by a telescope in Canada.

The precise nature and origin of the blasts of radio waves is unknown.

Among the 13 fast radio bursts, known as FRBs, was a very unusual repeating signal, coming from the same source about 1.5 billion light years away.

Such an event has only been reported once before, by a different telescope.

"Knowing that there is another suggests that there could be more out there," said Ingrid Stairs, an astrophysicist from the University of British Columbia (UBC).

"And with more repeaters and more sources available for study, we may be able to understand these cosmic puzzles - where they're from and what causes them."

The CHIME observatory, located in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, consists of four 100-metre-long, semi-cylindrical antennas, which scan the entire northern sky each day.

The telescope only got up and running last year, detecting 13 of the radio bursts almost immediately, including the repeater.

I don't think even the experts know.
Can tell us anything. 1.5 billion light years, 4.3 million years ago and etc.
To the normal person it's all nonsense. I'm with Sage on this.

i think with all this modern technology we should be able to build ourselves another planet so that when the sun burns out we will have one to move off to look for another sun, feck all this bull about looking for a suitable planet, there is nothing wrong with the one we have.
and before the sun burns itself out,we will have a bigger problem, the moon is starting to drift away from us every year about 4 inches further away,so it wont be long until it drags on the earth and slows us down so a day on earth will last about 600 hours.and it that does not get us,the massive star Betlgeuse is long past its sell by date and it could explode tomorrow and the fall out radiation will fry us all,so we are doomed unless we have a planet on stand by to move away to a new location ,so we need a reserve planet parked and ready to go.Laugh

"In simple terms please how far is 1.5 billion light years?"
Well a light year is 5.88 trillion miles (10 power 12), which quickly becoms unmanageable so they use the new unit.
So it's 1.5 billion X 5.88 trillion. Which is a very big number, it'll be like .. 9 x 10 to the power of 21 miles I should think.

It's a shame the Proclaimers never studied astrophysics, or we'd have more impressive distances in their lyrics.

Tinie Tempah

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I'm on my way
