Or some other form of mental faculty exam?

I believe for such an important job a person should possess very high levels of intelligence and common sense. Imagine, for instance, if we elected judges by common vote and somebody turned up in court to be tried by Diane Abbott! That would obviously be ludicrous, so we make sure our judges have to pass numerous checks and tests of competence.

Why not MPs, too?

what sort of test would be applied, perhaps getting a desmond from oxbridge
would suffice?

I would suggest a whole range of tests should be administered. It's too important a role to elect any below par.

some our our mps have no scrutiny as they will never lose a vote in their seat.

some criminals remain as mps,

not very satisfactory at all

a judge may find disqualifying circumstances for quite a lot of
our current crop, but they make the laws so they remain mostly
safe.

Do MPs need to swear an oath of allegiance to The Queen and Country before taking office?

I think voters should also take an IQ test.

Anyone unemployed, retired  or on benefits. No vote

They should lower the voting age to 5.

Should have to swear allegiance to St George before you can enter the polling booth.

totally agree lady, as moisock posted earlier as well

MP's do seem to lack integrity.

They are not interested in what the people think only in persuading us in what they think

An IQ test every year in case senility and/or complacency set/s in. And prohibit MP employing siblings or relatives facilitating their role as MP. Also, a stringent monitoring of expenses to minimise fraud.

I believe for such an important job a person should possess very high levels of intelligence and common sense.

Probably a reliable display for the capacity of someone to be fit to make correct decisions is if they've run a successful business. Even better if they've started one themselves.
In comparison to someone with academic qualifications who has never displayed any practical or constructive abilities beyond passing exams or clever use of words.

As an example, take the uneducated builder who rips off the educated school teacher over the price of a minor repair to their home.
Or the garage mechanic who does the same to the accountant who books their car in for a service and ends up paying for stuff that doesn't need doing.

Where does the IQ tests come in with regard to situations like these?

I expect the plumber who has just overcharged the lawyer for the cost of repairing his boiler, doesn't know whether he's ripped him off or ripped him of

All he knows is that he's walking off with more money in his pocket than he should have got for the job.  And he's just run rings around him using bullshine.

And the lawyer reciprocates with a hefty bill for little legal advice or work - swings and roundabouts. However, I do agree though experience is important to be an MP; a minimum age of 30 perhaps, and of good character and integrity.

They already take an IQ test, usually set by the Law Society or a Merchant Bank  e.g. the people who really run the country. Those who pass but who demonstrate the ability to follow orders are moved into the Potential MP stream.

Sorry moisok...I didn't see your post!

You know that "talking" on here is sometimes like with a close family member, who preempt and finish the retorts of others!
