Got to admit I'm a bit of a wuss, & horror movies not really my thing, but on reading a list of the top 50 horror movies of all time, was surprised to see Salems Lot not included. When Mr Barlow appears outside the cell I nearly jumped out of my seat. Also, the original Alien ratchets the tension right up. Number 1 on the list was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which I've never seen.

Incidentally , McCoy , why ask the question if you haven't seen the very benchmark of that specific genre ? Confused

Yeah The Exorcist for me to,i had to sleep with the light on for at least a week after watching that Movie....And I am not kidding.ScaredScaredScared

I'm getting the impression that the question should have read :-
What is the scariest horror movie of all time , after The Exorcist ?
Report conditor • December 24, 2018 2:54 PM GMT
The Exorcist ,NAP....... directors cut version, still spooks me 45years on
Report Reynard • December 24, 2018 2:55 PM GMT
Maybe the question should have read :-
What is the second scariest horror movie of all time , after The Exorcist ?
Report lovegod • December 24, 2018 3:03 PM GMT
Seen most of the Saw series, not sure if they're scary or just gruesome in the way people are killed.
Report doridoru • December 24, 2018 3:12 PM GMT
JAWS million times better film than The Exorcist, the re-release at cinemas I saw, the crowd was in hysterics at the mother sucks etc, I was expecting to be blown away with terror and was just a meh!
Report mega88 • December 24, 2018 3:14 PM GMT
Hellraisers were good, yea exorcist probably no 1, all had their moments, exorcist had stuff happen during and after filming which made it more creepy whether that was true is another story.

A good litmus test for myself to gauge how scary a film is,i watch it on my own and late at night.
The film's that I can remember being most afraid when I watched them were The
Exorcist, Exorcist 3, The Shining and Blair Witch Project.
Also, the British film The Legend of Hell House was really scary when I watched
it as a boy.
The last really scary film I saw was a romanian film called Them,a film that was as scary
as any I've ever seen.
Report conditor • December 24, 2018 3:41 PM GMT
Thiers a really scary one on tomorrow night ..... Mrs Browns Boys....to watch that $hite on Christmas Day makes you a zombie ........ and that is scary
Report Reynard • December 24, 2018 3:43 PM GMT
I think age is a big factor when judging the 'scare factor' of a film . I'm sure that The Evil Dead would seem pretty tame if I sat down and watched it now as opposed to when I first saw it in my early teens Scared

Nosferatu - 1922

I would class Alien as being more in the science fiction genre rather than horror, but either way it is a fantastic movie. Event Horizon, another film crossing over into both styles, might be considered scarier perhaps?

It happened, few deaths I believe, maybe coincidence, that film is just wrong,

The Fog, original version with Jamie Lee Curtis. Best watched in company.
Report McCoy Carp • December 24, 2018 9:18 PM GMT
Why put yourself through it? I suppose it's like eating a hot chilli? Like someone said gory and horror. And someone else said Alien and Event Horizon - don't fancy the latter Sad
Report Culvin • December 24, 2018 9:31 PM GMT
I forgot about The Fog,Bonnie. It's nearly always on the telly around this time.
I t s a fun film.I like the great John Housemans story around the campfire at start of the film
I also can't believe that I or anyone else hasn't mentioned
Psycho...Watching that as a child
was a scary unforgettable experience.

I've just remembered a film called Dead of Night. The scene in the prison cell with Michael Redgrave and his dummy was very scary, indeed
.

Wolf Creek had its moments but agree The Exorcist was the benchmark. For sheer realistic blood and guts but not really a horror movie Kajaki takes some beating - soldiers getting blown up in a landmined valley in Aftganistan.
Report Get me a drink • December 24, 2018 10:59 PM GMT
Sinister is quite scary, as is The Conjuring. Jeepers Creepers I enjoyed as well, but the scariest has to be The Exorcist I wouldn't watch it for years due to it's reputation alone.

I made the mistake of watching The Birds when I was young, that scared me for days or weeks afterwards.

I'm not one for those gory type of horror films though, like blood everywhere and that, that's not so much scary as sickening.
Report lovegod • December 25, 2018 7:49 AM GMT
The Fog gets a mention above and rightly so. Another scary John Carpenter film was The Thing.
Report twonky • December 25, 2018 8:57 AM GMT
Another vote for The Exorcist, Regan spider walking down the stairs still brings out the goosebumps.

Ringu the original Japanese version also deserves a mention.

Rosemary's Baby and The Haunting just for sheer tension.

No scary films.  They're all pretend.  You get some films where, say, the scene is quiet and then the attacker or whoever jumps out, but that's a cheap shot and not scary.  Creep up to someone and shout boo! and they'll jump.  Doesn't make you a genius at horror.
Report Manoleeds • December 25, 2018 11:02 AM GMT
Funny Games -either the original or the remake must be up there.

Make my hay, jack Nicolson was at times a terrible ham in The Shining but despite that, The Shining remains the scariest film I've ever seen.
